Southshore Companies and United Container Co. are seeking an experienced Human Resource Generalist to join our growing, dynamic team. We are a group of commonly owned businesses operating within the commercial real estate, asset-based trucking, third party warehousing and packaging industries. This position is based out of our Corporate Headquarters in St. Joseph, MI but will travel to our satellite offices during the week. The ideal candidate will be interested in growing with our HR team and the company and comfortable working with multiple business entities in multiple states.
Responsibilities:
- Is a resource for management, providing a wide spectrum of HR guidance as needed.
- Provides support and counseling to the management team and employees regarding job-related conflicts, problem solving and dispute resolution. Assists management with disciplinary actions and terminations ensuring consistency in practice and compliance with policy and law.
- Provides information and guidance to management and employees regarding our Health Insurance Program. Efficiently processes benefit enrollments and terminations. Assists with annual benefits open enrollment.
- Processes payroll as needed ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and is a resource for resolution when issues arise.
- Assists recruiting and onboarding efforts including assisting with interviewing, new hire orientation, compilation and processing of new hire paperwork, and new hire benefit enrollment.
- Efficiently and professionally communicates with Temp Agencies as needed.
- Works in our HRIS to input employee, wage and benefits changes. Is proficient in pulling reports to assist management.
- Works with our management team and our employees to drive Safety in the Workplace. Works with our Workers Compensation Carrier, employees and providers to efficiently manage claims.
- Commits to staying abreast of HR-related legal and compliance issues. Continuous education is requisite.
- Provides efficient and accurate paperwork processing and organization skills. Processes Unemployment paperwork timely and attends Unemployment Hearings as needed.
- Drives and is committed to improving HR processes, the HR team and our Company.
- Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in human resources, business administration or a related field; certification in Human Resources preferred.
- 3+ years of progressive human resources experience, preferably in manufacturing, production, or a related industry. Demonstrated knowledge of employment law, regulations, and statutes, safety, and training.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal communication
- Demonstrated strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HRM systems.
- Ability to make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure; ability to prioritize and organize effectively; ability to show judgment and initiative.
- Demonstrated ability confidentiality, professionalism, and decorum.
- Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task and work under pressure in a face-paced environment.
- Ability and willingness to travel during the week.

Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification in Human Resources preferred.
- 3 plus years of progressive human resources experience working in a similar industry is preferred; additional education may be substituted for years of work experience.
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift (potentially longer days when travelling)
- Monday to Friday
Work Location:
- Based out of Corporate Office in St. Joseph. Some travel to other facilities.
Pay:
- $60,000 + based on experience.
