Weatherization Technician
(level 1)
Job Description: A weatherization technician installs energy-efficient measures to single family or 2-4 unit-homes using a variety of building science best practices to improve safety, comfort, durability, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency.
Range of Wages: The hourly wage for Weatherization Technicians is $18.00 – $21.00 per hour. Wages are determined on skills, knowledge, experience, certifications and work ethics.
Qualifications: The following competencies and skills are required to work as a weatherization technician:
- A technician must possess a basic understanding of math, reading, writing and computer skills in addition to knowledge of basic construction principles.
- A technician must also possess knowledge of installation procedures, manufacturer’s specifications, and OSHA safety standards.
- This knowledge or training can be gained through the employer or an affiliate training organization as the technician advances through the company.
Certification: Completion and obtainment of the following certifications when available are required for weatherization technicians: OSHA 10 or 30-hour Safety Training Program, (RRP) Lead Renovator Certification.
Experience: Weatherization technician is an entry level position. No formal experience is required; however training or experience in air sealing, duct sealing, insulation and basic construction knowledge is preferred. This training is primarily conducted on the job and is not required as a prerequisite for employment. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not required at this time.
Career Path: Advancement options available to weatherization technicians also include tiered levels of advancement in the following areas: Weatherization Technician, Supervisor, Crew Chief, QC inspector, Energy auditor, and Building analyst. Depending on track record and a display of leadership skills; successful technicians may transition to a Weatherization Supervisor position within 1 – 2 years.
Additional Comments: Technicians and Installers may be required to pass a drug test, possess the ability to lift 75 pounds and fit through tight attic and crawl space dimensions. Technicians will be given instructions and work tasks dictated by the lead Supervisor and/or Crew Chief.
Weatherization Supervisor
(level 2)
Job Description: The Supervisor answers directly to the Crew Chief and is responsible for skills training, equipment training, safety procedures, and best work practices of the weatherization technicians. Depending on experience level; Supervisors may be responsible for running entire jobs from start to finish without direct oversight of the Crew Chief.
Range of Wages: The hourly wage for a Weatherization Supervisor is $22.00 – $25.00 per hour. Wages are determined on skills, knowledge, experience, certifications and work ethics.
Qualifications: Supervisors must be able to demonstrate a complete understanding of the house a system as well as the installation of all thermal and shell measures. Must be able to instruct and competently train weatherization technicians in the field as well as other leadership responsibilities designated by the Crew Leader. The skills necessary for this position are typically acquired through on the job experience.
Certification: Completion and obtainment of the following certifications when available may be required for weatherization technicians: OSHA 10 or 30-hour Safety Training Program, (RRP) Lead Renovator Certification, (BPI) Retrofit Installer / Technician Certification
Experience: Weatherization Supervisor is a mid-level position and formal experience is required including but not limited to; air sealing, duct sealing, insulation, window installation, carpentry skills, roofing and other shell related experience and certifications. This training is primarily conducted on the job; however some of the certifications and continuing education is conducted in a classroom setting and will be required for this position.
Career Path: Advancement options available to weatherization supervisors also include tiered levels of advancement in the following areas: Crew Chief, QC inspector, Energy auditor, and Building analyst. Depending on job availability and track record; successful Supervisors may transition to a Crew Chief role after 1 – 3 years of holding the title and duties of a Weatherization Supervisor.

Weatherization Crew Chief
(level 3)
Job Description: The Crew Chief is responsible for supervising the retrofitting activities specified in the scope of work. The Crew Chief is responsible for interacting with the client plus managing personnel and materials on the job site in a safe and effective manner. The Crew Chief is responsible for quality control, testing procedures, documentation, and conducting a final walk through to ensure that all work is completed in a satisfactory manner.
Range of Wages: The starting hourly wage for Weatherization Crew Chief is $26.00 - per hour and up. Wages are determined on skills, knowledge, experience, certifications and work ethics. Due to work conditions and physical requirements of this position; the pay scale for this position is typically the highest paid position within the company. Advancement to other positions may result in a reduction of pay due to the nature of physical duties and responsibilities of this position.
Qualifications: A Weatherization Crew Chief requires all skills needed to be an installer plus training or experience in the following competencies:
- the ability to manage a crew of Installers so weatherization work is conducted in a safe, efficient and effective manner.
- Ensure that the job site and Installers comply with the Safe Work Practices
- Maintain quality control of weatherization work and ensure it meets program standards
- Understand a work order; Order and obtain materials, supplies, and equipment in time to avoid delays and wasted time on the job site.
- Warehouse materials as necessary to avoid delays in completing weatherization work.
Certification: A Crew Chief requires all of the following certifications including any certifications that are required of a weatherization technician. This includes OSHA 10 or 30-hour Safety Training Program; (RRP) Lead Renovator Certification; (PTCS) Performance Tested Comfort Systems; (BPI) Weatherization or Energy Efficiency Training.
Experience: A Crew Chief usually has a GED or high school diploma. At least 5 years of on the job experience is typically required to transition from a Weatherization Supervisor to a Crew Chief - additional education and (BPI) training is typically required.
Career Path: Advancement options available to Weatherization Crew Chiefs also include tiered levels of advancement in the following areas: QC inspector, Energy auditor, Building analyst, and upper management if the opportunity presents itself.
