Primary Purpose:
The primary purpose of the Lead ESL Teacher is to prepare, communicate, report and implement documented LPAC decisions for students identified as limited English proficient (LEP) in compliance with federal, state, and district regulations and policies. The Lead ESL Teacher will also develop, implement, monitor, evaluate and refine professional development that focuses on the most appropriate learning activities and teaching strategies in order to maximize LEP students’ potential for English-language acquisition and academic achievement.
Qualifications: Education/Certification:
Current Texas teaching certificate
Current ESL or bilingual certificate
Master’s Degree in related educational area, preferred
Experience:
· Master teacher of 3 years who has embedded appropriate evidence-based, differentiated instructional practices that have resulted in high levels of student progress
· Master teacher who has demonstrated successful classroom management that facilitates a high level of student engagement
· CTC experience for TELPAS, preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
· Working knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment
· Deep knowledge and understanding of the holistic traits of the identified LEP students and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol Model (SIOP)
· Demonstrates ability to differentiate instructional strategies and techniques for LEP students
· Demonstrates ability to work directly and collaboratively with parents and campus and district personnel toward the continued success of LEP students
· Exhibits strong leadership and collaboration skills
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills
· Strong organizational and presentation skills
· Skilled in technology, including software such as the
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Instructional Strategies
1. Confers and collaborates with classroom teachers to develop strategic and appropriate lesson plans for language intervention and instruction for each LEP student
2. Provides support, resource information and instructional strategies to classroom teachers of LEP students by providing materials, instructional methods and innovative ideas to ensure appropriate educational experiences for LEP students in the general education classroom
3. Presents information and evidence-based practices to relevant faculty members according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, UME Preparatory Academy Board policies, administrative regulations and UME Preparatory Academy Curriculum and Instruction Division
4. Works cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for students with disabilities according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP) for those students also identified as LEP
5. Implements appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
6. Demonstrates knowledge of campus improvement plan, curriculum standards, and implementation of applicable components
7. Works with campus and district leadership to select appropriate books, equipment, and other instructional materials
8. Uses technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Classroom Management and Organization
9. Uses evidence-based classroom management strategies to engage students in rigorous learning and maintain a supportive environment that is appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of all students
10. Works with the leadership team to create a campus culture where students are encouraged to use their strengths, explore their personal and interpersonal development, and risk new areas of thought and action Communication
Student Growth and Development
11. Analyzes and implements student achievement data to drive and adjust instruction
12. Facilitates, monitors and supports the alignment and implementation of the Response to Intervention (RTI) process to maximize identified student support and achievement
13. Conducts ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing
14. Showcases the academic performance of identified LEP students
15. Assumes responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal whenever possible Communication
16. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers
17. Maintains a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members 18. Uses effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly in professional development settings
19. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and serves on staff committees as needed
20. Acts as liaison between campus and district-level personnel for LEP program, between LPAC and ARD committees, between LPAC and campus/district testing coordinator
Professional Growth and Development
21. Participates in staff development activities to improve job-related skills as listed in local Board policy 22. Collaborates with colleagues and other professionals for continuous growth and development Compliance and Documentation
23. Complies with state, district, and school regulations, including policies and guidelines for classroom teachers as well as those related to LEP students
24. Follows federal, state, and district guidelines regarding documentation that will be presented during LPAC meetings, including initial identification, testing decisions, annual evaluation, program placement recommendations, and monitoring of exited students.
25. Administers language assessments, as applicable, to determine language acquisition, program eligibility and dismissal.
26. Compiles, maintains, and files all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required
27. Coordinates LPAC meetings to be conducted at appropriate times throughout the school year in compliance with federal, state, and district guidelines
28. Coordinates with campus leadership team and Director of Bilingual/ESL, in conjunction with the campus LPACs, in evaluating and testing students with limited English proficiency
29. Provides periodic reports to parents of ESL students in regards to their child’s English language acquisition
30. Coordinates with other programs, such as but not limited to GT, RTI, and IB to ensure equal access for LEP students.
31. Participates in the ARD Committee as required for special education students also identified as LEP 32. Serves as the campus TELPAS coordinator if needed
