We are looking to fill substitute teacher positions at our Columbus, Greensburg, Shelbyville, Seymour and Franklin locations.
The job of the Substitute is responsible for assisting in the classroom as needed. The Substitute Teacher woks as a support system with young children, their parents, other staff, volunteers, and community partners to provide developmentally appropriate quality childcare in a center-based environment that follows all Head Start Performance Standards, State Licensing Requirements, and other requirement as appropriate.
Monday-Friday, variable hours and is part-time.

Minimum Education and Experience requirement:
- A minimum of a High School Diploma
- Must complete and maintain CPR and First Aid Certifications.
- CDA preferred
- Previous experience working in a classroom and/or with children preferred
Essential Functions
- Nurturing skills, be able to implement positive and anticipatory guidance with children and be able to move and play with small children both in and outdoors, including routine tasks such as diaper changing, feeding, moving toys, washing laundry and dishes. Strong skills to communicate in a meaningful and appropriate manner with infants and toddlers.
- Learn and adhere to Head Start Program Performance Standards and agency policies and procedures and how the program implements systems to comply with the standards and licensing.
- Provides responsive care to center-based children.
- Follow all Active Supervision, making sure the classroom/playground is in ratio, monitored by 2 paid staff, and that children are always visible to staff. Staff will be strategically placed in zones on the playground to ensure all children are always within sight and sound.
- Maintain confidentiality as well as report suspected incidents (e.g., physical, sexual and/or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) to appropriate parties as required by federal and local laws, and Human Services policies.
- Maintain classroom equipment, work areas, student files/records to ensure availability of items, provide reliable information, and ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
- Assist children with toileting as necessary.
- Follow Blood Borne Pathogens procedure.
- Implement indoor/outdoor and quiet/active activities appropriate for age groups to actively participate in the learning activities with children.
- Collaborate with families to optimize the development of each child and help to enhance parenting skills.
- Implement academic, behavior, health, and nutrition plans to ensure compliance with established regulations and/or Performance Standards and encourage parent involvement.
- Monitor students in a variety of educational settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Model conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Act as a support and resource person to help case manage families’ specific needs, advocate for parents, and encourage parent involvement in the program.
- Respond immediately to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Cover classroom teaching staff breaks, help covering classroom openings and provide support where assigned.
- Ensure that all participants regardless of race, gender, culture, primary language or religious beliefs are treated equally and all needs are accommodated so that high quality services are provided to all.
- Complete all other tasks as assigned by the Site Supervisor.
