Job Summary:
An Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) works closely with dentists and other dental team members to provide comprehensive oral healthcare services. The EFDA performs a wide range of advanced clinical and administrative tasks to support the delivery of quality dental care to CHC patients. This position requires a strong knowledge of dental procedures, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Duties:
Assist the dentist during various dental procedures, including restorative, endodontic, and surgical treatments.
· Prepare treatment rooms and sterilize instruments and equipment.
· Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) as directed by the dentist.
· Perform preliminary patient assessments, including taking vital signs and updating medical histories.
· Place and remove temporary restorations.
· Fabricate and cement temporary crowns or bridges.
· Perform dental prophylaxis (cleanings) and apply fluoride treatments.
· Assist with the placement and removal of orthodontic appliances.
· Provide post-operative instructions to patients.
· Apply topical anesthetic to the injection site.
· Remove permanent cement from supragingival surfaces.
· Legally operate dental x-ray equipment
· Perform dental radiographic procedures.
· Process dental radiographs
· Mount and label dental radiographs
· Perform coronal polishing procedures (Supra gingival)
· Placing and condensing amalgam restoration and other restorative materials
· Carving and contouring amalgam restorations
· Perform fluoride treatments, including fluoride varnish.
· Placing and removing rubber dams.
· Place and remove matrix bands.
· Fabricate and place temporary crowns.
· Maintain field of operation during dental procedures through the use of retraction, suction, irrigation, drying, placing and removing cotton rolls, etc.
2. Administrative Duties:
· Ability to schedule patient appointments and manage the dental office's EHR.
· Maintain accurate patient records, including treatment plans, progress notes, and billing information.
· Process insurance claims and verify patient insurance coverage.
· Handle patient inquiries, resolve concerns, and provide exceptional customer service.
· Manage inventory levels of dental supplies and equipment.
· Ensure compliance with infection control protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
3. Professional Development:
· Stay updated on current dental techniques, materials, and technologies through continuing education courses.
· Attend staff meetings and participate in training sessions as required.
· Adhere to ethical standards and professional guidelines set by the dental industry.
Qualifications:
· Completion of an accredited dental assisting program.
· Certification as an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) or equivalent, as required by state regulations.
· Current CPR certification.
· Proficiency in dental terminology, procedures, and instruments.
· Strong knowledge of infection control protocols and safety measures.
· Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
· Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to multitask and work well under pressure.
· Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
