EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry or related field is required. A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience that includes extensive knowledge of Fire Alarm Systems, Water-Based Sprinkler Systems, Clean Agent Systems, and working knowledge of NFPA standards for buildings and rapid transit systems are required. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required. Highly effective analytical and problem-solving skills required. Certification by NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering) is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia desired. A master’s degree may be substituted for one year of experience. In lieu of a degree, directly related experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
INTERVIEW SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process may include one or more components to demonstrate applicants’ knowledge, skills and abilities in job related areas. These may include exercises such as practical demonstrations, written communications, oral interviews and/or competency assessments.
SUMMARY
Responsible for providing engineering expertise in fire protection engineering such as Water -Based (Automatic Sprinkler) Systems, Clean Agent Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, Fire Prevention Programs, Smoke Control and Management, Building Design Layout, and Space Planning.
Employee demonstrates extensive knowledge of NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) standards for Buildings and Rapid Transit Systems. Able to perform fire suppression and fire alarm systems calculations; such as hydraulic calculations for sprinkler systems and battery and voltage drop calculations for fire alarm systems. Prepares and/or evaluates designs, drawings and specifications, for new facilities construction. Monitors construction and equipment installations, current facilities expansions, additions, and retrofits.
Ensures drawings and specifications conform to MARTA’s design criteria, the latest codes, and industry standards for fire protection systems.
Employee provides technical support to Engineering, Electrical Power and Equipment, Construction, Buildings and Support for fire protection systems redesigns, retrofits or rehabilitations. Provides support for system capital and maintenance contracts to ensure the systems are designed, manufactured, installed, tested and/or modified in full compliance with the contractual requirements, for a safe, reliable rapid transit system. Supports field testing and monitoring activities to evaluate the performance of the fire protection systems.
Acts as a liaison and technical expert between MARTA and local Authority Having Jurisdictions (AHJ) to receive inquiries and resolve concerns related to the Authorities’ fire protection systems. Employee serves as Lead Fire Protection Engineer for special project teams. Employee supports MARTA’s Legal staff in fire protection related matters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. 3. Prepares and updates design criteria, drawings, schematics, diagrams, and manuals for MARTA contracts and equipment. Reviews changes to these criteria and assures that approved changes are incorporated into the documents. Provides support for system capital and maintenance contracts to ensure the systems are designed, manufactured, installed, tested and/or modified in full compliance with the contractual requirements, for a safe, reliable rapid transit system.
4. Monitors the preparation of drawings and specifications and construction related activities of the General Engineering Consultant on new facilities construction and existing facilities expansions, additions, and retrofits. Reviews drawings and specifications for new facilities and retrofits of existing facilities that are prepared by other outside consultants.
5. Provides technical support to Engineering, Electrical Power and Equipment, Construction, Buildings and Support, for fire protection systems redesigns, retrofits or rehabilitations.
6. Serves as Lead Engineer for special project teams.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Employee serves as Lead Fire Protection Engineer for special project teams. Employee provides technical direction and supervision to lower-level Engineers, Corrosion Technicians and Contractors. Employee serves as Lead Engineer for special project teams.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Certification by NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering) is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Georgia desired.
