Description
AS&M has an exciting opportunity for a RF Comm Systems & Test Engineer for VIPER to join the team Houston, Texas.
Responsibilities
As an RF Comm Systems & Test Engineer for VIPER, you will:
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for the Communications Systems supporting the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) which is a lunar exploration rover being developed at NASA Johnson Space Center
- Write Radio Frequency communication subsystem level Interface Requirements Documents (IRD), Verification Requirements (VRs), & Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for spacecrafts. Review IRDs, ICDs and component level requirements (Transponders, Transceivers, baseband processors)
- Support software and hardware design and development in areas of analysis, integration and operational testing and certification
- Execute, test and document integration and testing solutions
- Determine the performance of Radio Frequency (RF) communication links and software defined radios, single board computers, LNAs and filters using analytical methods or by applying analysis to simulation tools
- Actively participate and contribute to Systems Requirements Reviews (SRR), Preliminary & Critical Design Reviews, Component level reviews and Technical Interchange Meetings
- Perform radio frequency interference & compatibility analysis for space-based communication systems
- Assist and support NASA RF communication sub system manager with reviews, meetings and be the technical point of contact for testing and integration of the communication system
- Provide technical expertise and support cross-functional teams including project managers, network engineers and operations personnel
- Develop and maintain technical documentation for spacecraft communications systems architecture definition, design and development
- Represent JSC and interface with other NASA centers and federal agencies
- Perform analysis using software such as Matlab, Simulink and Excel
- Other duties as required
Qualifications
Requisition Qualifications:
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship required for this position.
- Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2- 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
- Must have completed college level RF Communications course work
- Strong analytical skills in RF communications
- Excellent knowledge of communication systems such as digital modulation, spread spectrum signals and signal detection
- Excellent communication and organizational skills along with the ability to work in a team environment
- Articulate speaker with ability to communicate complex technical ideas in a concise manner
- Share passion of our Nations Space Program, excitement of developing the next human-rated space vehicles and ability to return to the moon
Requisition Preferences
- Experience with NASA processes including software lifecycle
- Experience with Deep Space Network (DSN) communication protocol and testing
- Knowledge in antennas, RF propagation and network layer protocols is a plus
- Excellent knowledge of communication systems
Work Environment
Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Physical Requirements
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
Equipment and Machines
Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
Attendance
Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
