Position Overview
The Math Instructional Coach (MIC) will provide instructional support and coaching to math teachers and support staff as they work to ensure that each scholar masters grade level content and is prepared for high school and beyond. The MIC's primary role is to work with math teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address skill gaps (teachers and scholars). As an advisor to math teachers and thought partner to the Principal, the MIC is responsible for four main areas: a) observing instructional delivery and providing feedback to enhance and support the development of each math teacher's content knowledge b) supporting math teachers in the design of units and lessons for the development of their yearlong curriculum, c) analyzing data in order to modify curriculum and forms of assessment to address gaps in academic achievement and d) working with the academic staff to support sharing of best practices. The MIC will work collaboratively with the Principal on developing instructional strategies and intervention programs for struggling scholars. This will include modeling lessons in classrooms, helping teacher groups plan instruction, creating math specific policies and procedures, facilitating professional development and teaching at-risk scholars as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
- Collaborate with the Principal to plan and deliver Pre-service summer professional development for new and returning staff members aligned to high priority initiatives and outcomes in the area of mathematics.
- Plan and provide modeling, coaching, planning support and observations with each teacher using effective math strategies on a weekly basis.
- Maintain a file for each teacher that outlines professional development strategies, scheduled visits, and progress towards meeting school goals and objectives.
- Develop, monitor and implement Professional Improvement Plans (PIPS) for struggling math teachers.
- Support the development of high quality/effective math instruction in all classes by observing and providing feedback to teachers and support staff.
- Provide exemplar lessons and co-plan with math teachers to improve instructional planning using data, assessments, and instructional technology.
- Work with math teachers to refine and develop curriculum framework documents (i.e. unit plans and pacing calendars) and end of unit, mid-year and end of year common assessments for each grade level.
- Work directly with teachers to facilitate analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments.
- Help teacher teams develop both school wide and classroom intervention plans.
- Work with the Principal to develop policies and school structures that facilitate the improvement of math instruction and the appropriate interventions and supports for scholars.
- Serve as the project lead for grants geared toward the improvement of math instruction.
- Continuously monitor, track and analyze student achievement data in order to identify needed supports and strategies.
- Provide academic intervention and support to at-risk scholars using a push-in or pull-out model.
- Conduct informal and formal (minimum of 1) observations of all math teachers.
- Work collaboratively with the Science Instructional Coach to foster interdisciplinary learning between the science and math departments.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Principal and Executive Director.
Academic & Certification Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree required, Master Degree preferred.
- New York State Teacher 7-12 Teacher Certification preferred.
Work Experience & Skills
- Minimum of 5 years 6th-8th grade certified teaching experience, preferred
- Able to improve curriculum and instruction through collaboration as part of the leadership team.
- Passionately dedicated to the school's mission with a steadfast belief that all scholars will receive a rigorous middle school education.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required to develop rubrics, examine data and metrics that will enhance student knowledge and promote performance of superior work products.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a diverse team of teachers and administrators.
- Strong knowledge of middle school math standards and demonstrated experience with executing planned lessons to meet the differential needs of each student.
- Strong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology.
