Position Focus:
The Assistant Manager of Payroll will be responsible for managing the front-line team along with the work. Responsible for identifying risks and trends that enable the payroll process to function at the highest level and follow all University guidelines. This individual leads the area of the department that functions as a single point of contact for Payroll requests and questions. Coordinating and working with Associate Director to monitor the key financial internal control risk areas within payroll. This position is the liaison with outside teams such as HR, HRIS and Finance Systems and Solutions for testing and implementing new and updated PR processes.
Essential Duties
1. Manage the Frontline Team: responsible for managing the day-to-day work and staff of Payroll’s frontline team for all seven distinct payrolls that occur each month. Manage, mentor, lead and supervise the team, oversee the work product produced by the team, and working to ensure that the team’s efforts are focused on payroll’s goals, or that efforts are evolving as work/goals evolve.2. Manage the Quality Assurance review that is performed during and after every payroll process to ensure accuracy for all processes and compliance with University Guidelines and Federal Regulations.3. Lead the development of a quality program for payroll and serve as the back-up quality analyst for an average of 7 distinct payrolls plus any off-cycle payroll runs. This work includes both identifying common errors and long-term solutions within all payroll types and cultivating processes and procedures to support financial controls within the payroll process.4. Manage the creation and execution of testing plans for any changes/enhancements to PR Workday, both on an adhoc basis and regular 6-month updates.5. Ensure any system issues experienced by the frontline team are reported and collaborate with Payroll Manager to resolve.6. Responsible for the execution the manual payment process and monitor and identify the necessary corrections for retroactive pay for an average of 7 distinct payrolls per month. Identify opportunities to eliminate over/underpayments and advise on solutions7. Responsible to provide on the job task training for the frontline team as well as training for any changes to payroll processes or procedures that the team is responsible for (both business and Workday processes). As the quality program develops and evolves, support training efforts for the entire Payroll team.8. Responsible for execution of the Tier 2 service program and approach. This work includes monitoring Payroll’s Salesforce queue, ensuring that cases are being work/assigned by the frontline team; supporting the frontline team in any questions that they have or working through issues that they encounter; serving as the point of contact for ESC Communications and escalations.9. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance and a minimum of seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of advanced education and experience.

Demonstrated in depth working knowledge of payroll.

Proven capability to handle multiple priorities with the ability to delegate responsibilities.

Demonstrated application of financial, accounting and internal control concepts with the ability to identify opportunities for improvements, efficiencies, and effectiveness of payroll processes, procedures, and policies.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to see the big picture, while remaining attentive to detail.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Strong analytical skills with a capability to recommend and identify ways to resolve issues.
