NAKASEC is seeking a full-time, exempt Senior Finance Manager position to work closely with the Finance & Compliance Director to ensure NAKASEC, NAKASEC Action Fund, and Asian Americans for Change Fund’s finances are regularly managed and adhere to generally accepted accounting principles. The position is based in Chicago, IL. The role may require infrequent travel. The salary for this position ranges from $77,000 to $85,000, with exact salary depending on experience. This position will be a great fit for a seasoned Senior Finance Manager to oversee day-to-day financial operations with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring adherence to board-approved budgets, forecasting opportunities and challenges, and maintaining robust cash flow management. Your expertise will be pivotal in facilitating timely financial reporting in collaboration with our accounting firm, while guaranteeing accuracy in bill payments, payroll processing, and tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions. Your responsibilities extend to coordinating financial communications with key stakeholders, including Co-Directors, fiscal sponsorees, and board members, and preparing and presenting financial reports to our Board of Directors. Moreover, you will play a central role in managing fiscal sponsorships, executing subgrants, and staying abreast of evolving tax laws and regulations to ensure compliance and mitigate risk. Your role will also extend to nurturing the growth and development of finance and compliance contractors engaged by NAKASEC, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability within the team.

NAKASEC was founded by local Korean community-based organizations from across the United States. These organizations felt the need for a strong, progressive voice that could impact federal policy and build a national movement. NAKASEC remains strongly connected with and informed by the local groups that originally formed us. Our affiliates serve as our channel to learn more about the issues impacting our community members at the grassroots level. This local-to-national channel directly informs NAKASEC’s national campaigns, policy agenda, and other projects.
NAKASEC’s affiliates are HANA Center (Illinois), Woori Center (Pennsylvania), MinKwon Center for Community Action (New York), Hamkae Center (Virginia), and Woori Juntos (Texas).
What you will Do
The Senior Finance Manager, who is based in Chicago, Illinois and reports to the Finance & Compliance Director is responsible for the following:
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including ensuring the organization is abiding by its board approved budget, forecasting opportunities, issues and challenges, ensuring sound cash flow management, and providing timely financial reporting in conjunction with the accounting firm. This includes:
- Ensure all bills and invoices are being paid in a timely manner.
- Ensure payroll is being paid properly and in a timely manner and allocated by program and legal entity for cost-sharing purposes.
- Ensure payroll taxes and any other employment associated taxes in various states are paid in a correct and timely manner.
- Ensure transactions are being recorded and classified correctly.
- Ensure monthly expense reporting and reconciliations are completed and presented in a timely manner.
- Ensure invoicing and reimbursement for cost-sharing agreements between NAKASEC and its affiliates are regularly conducted.
- Coordinate fiscal sponsorships and prepare for and attend monthly financial meetings with fiscal sponsorees.
- Ensure audit and tax materials are being prepared by the organizations, fiscal sponsorees and the finance and operations firm and requests from our auditor are being fulfilled in a timely manner.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the board of directors and executive directors.
- Attend board meetings and work closely with board treasurers for financial reporting.
- Produce and execute Memorandums of Understanding for subgrants for NAKASEC, fiscal sponsorees, and NAKASEC Action Fund.
- Stay up-to-date with changes in tax laws (Federal, State, County and City) and regulations, and communicate updates to relevant stakeholders within the organization
- Ensure strong internal controls are developed, implemented and updated as needed.
- Prepare finance reports to funders as needed.
- Attend staff meetings, manager meetings, and other meetings as needed
- Assist NAKASEC Co-Directors with projects as needed

Who you are & Keys to Success (the Must-haves)
- Proficiency in English
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; Advanced Degree preferred such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Finance (MFin), or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation
- Minimum 5 years of accounting or finance experience preferably in the nonprofit sector or a similar environment. Experience with nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and grant management is highly valuable.
- Ability to reprioritize and pivot to meet NAKASEC, funders, and government deadlines.
- The ability to manage work with the finance team effectively. ExStrong analytical skills for evaluating financial data, interpreting trends, and providing insights to inform strategic decision-making.
- Experience in budget development, monitoring, and forecasting is vital. Nonprofit finance directors
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are important for effectively communicating financial information to stakeholders with varying levels of financial expertise.
- Experience in financial strategic planning and long-term financial modeling.

Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
