Job Title: Behavioral Health Outpatient Therapist

Overview/Job Purpose:
The Behavioral Health Outpatient Therapist (BHOT) will be part of a comprehensive Behavioral Health team that provides consultation, direct patient care and acts as a liaison in the outpatient clinics between the Behavioral Health service line, Primary Care service line, and Urgent Care service line. The BHOT reports to the Director of Behavioral Health and collaborates with other treatment providers in the care of clients between school age and geriatric age in the clinic. The BHOT will be licensed by the State of New Mexico as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Professional Counselor.
Summary of Primary Duties:
As a BHOT at Duke City Behavioral Healthcare, a division of Duke City Primary Care, day-to-day duties may include, but are not limited to, the various tasks below:
- As part of an integrated care team, the BHOT identifies, evaluates, and manages clients with behavioral health problems within a variety of settings.
- Performs counseling, crisis interventions, therapeutic interventions and case management for each client assigned including:
Assessment
o Diagnosis
o Care planning
o Intervention such as counseling clients/significant others, facilitating brief
psychotherapy and educational groups, and planning discharges.
o Evaluation (including identifying unmet or new therapy services).
- Completes clinical care documentation to include but not limited to: initial assessments, treatment plans, progress notes and discharge summary per time limited requirements.
- Formulates treatment plans in conjunction with rest of treatment team.
- Provides skill training through client education strategies and develops specific behavioral health change plans for individual clients and behavioral health protocols for target populations.
- Timely enters and completes appropriate clinical documentation per industry and agency standards and holds oneself accountable for his/her actions with regard to proper coding.
- Appropriately charging for all services rendered including accuracy, appropriateness, and providing care to clients founded on evidence-based practices.
- Works closely and communicates well with the documentation specialists who will assist in charting tasks and other closely related duties to better maintain efficiency.
- Performs the care services listed below (or be willing to learn those services) to include but not limited to the following:
o BHOT will treat clients for a multitude of behavioral health disorders including substance abuse.
o BHOT will offer a range of services including individual clinical assessments, biopsychosocial evaluations, therapeutic interventions, and work with a multi-discipline team.
- Works collaboratively with the PCP and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure clients reach targeted treatment goals through the initiation and continually updating of the treatment plan. Revises to treatment plan are completed as needed when client(s) is not progressing. Maintains registry of client progress.
- Provides brief psychosocial interventions when appropriate.
- Sees clients in a timely and efficient manner as scheduled and responds to clients in between scheduled appointments through appropriate and timely methods.
- Participates in the internal Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process, such as peer review, audits, and implementation of clinical paths.
- Attends ongoing internal and extern professional development events.
- Other duties may be assigned based on clinical need.
Performance Requirements:
- Exhibits advanced behavioral health assessment, testing, counseling, diagnosis, and referral skills.
- Exhibits an understanding of complex psychopathology and ability to deal with all types of clients with a myriad of behavioral health conditions.
- Exhibits an understanding of crisis intervention theory, case management, referral process, and exhibits knowledge of psychopathology and ICD-10 diagnoses.
- Demonstrates ability to assess clients in crisis situations and initiate transfer to higher level of care when needed.
- Demonstrates ability to lead and co-lead cognitive behavioral, psychoeducational, DBT and evidenced-based therapy sessions.
- Exhibits an understanding of the recovery process.
- Practices sound judgment in clinical practice and the rationale of appropriate clinical care; adheres to all ethical considerations of the clinical field; knows limitations and seeks consultation when advisable; keeps abreast of current technologies and industry standards
- Demonstrates flexibility with job assignments, adaptable to change, and provides possible resolutions/solutions to issues/concerns, rather than simply pointing out a problem area.
- Demonstrates effective time management to complete work-related activities, timeline requirements and clinical documentation.
- Creates, adheres to, and promotes a positive work environment based on teamwork and positive promotion of one another.
- Demonstrates ability to meets all clinical obligations of practice to include but not limited to: accrediting agency compliance, HIPAA, State and Federal regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrates adherence to all internal, administrative policies and procedures, as well as provides constructive feedback when appropriate.
- Demonstrates accountability for completion of all operational tasks according to departmental guidelines to ensure appropriate clinical processing/documentation including patient transfer follow-up.

- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with clients, their families, and all staff members.

- Provides feedback to the Director of Behavioral Health or Clinic Manager who serve as the BHOT’s administrative voices regarding “internal practice management issues” including, but not limited to, clinical practice issues, personnel issues, administrative decision-making, departmental priority setting, and creation of operational policies and procedures; in addition, feedback will periodically be sought, and constructive suggestions welcomed
- Demonstrate proactive approach to patient and staff safety by seeking opportunities to improve safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
- Addresses any administrative issues directly and in private with those concerned.
- Conveys professional role model example and helps educate other staff through quality of own clinical practice and work habits when time permits, or circumstances are appropriate.
- Assists in creating a constructive professional atmosphere for the staff by being a positive influence; actions/comments should enhance morale and staff relations.
- Committed to learning new technologies and to providing leadership/training to the staff as new technologies are implemented.
- Demonstrates efficiency, accuracy, and demonstrates the ability to organize and coordinate multiple tasks.
- Maintains a high level of energy with the ability to adjust to any justifiable pace.
Supervisor Responsibilities:
This position carries no supervisory responsibilities. The Behavioral Healthcare program falls under the direction and oversite of the Director of Behavioral Health.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday 8:00-4:30pm.
Education Requirements:
- § Possess a Master’s or Doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
- Possess a Master’s or Doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a school fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or a regionally accredited institution
- Possess a Master’s or Doctoral degree in counseling from a school fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educations Programs (CACREP)
Experience Requirements:
- 3 years directly related experience preferred.
- Competent in all Microsoft Office applications (up to intermediate skill level as a minimum)
Preferred experience:
- Prior experience with substance abuse
- Prior experience with evidenced based therapy (i.e., CBT, ACT, MI, CPT, PE, EMDR, etc.)
- Prior experience with integrated care
Required Licensures/Certifications
- Possess a full and unrestricted license or certification by the state of New Mexico to independently practice social work at the Master’s degree level
- NM State licensure as an independent Professional Counselor
- NM State licensure as an independent Marriage and Family Therapist
- Possess CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or Professional Rescuer for employees working on site.
