IDEA Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. serves approximately 320 students in Grades 9-12. Our unique program prepares students for both college and careers. In addition to offering college preparatory courses, including Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment options, we also provide students with a variety of options for career technical education. All students at IDEA complete a career program of study. We currently offer the following career programs: child development, construction, computer science, culinary arts, and hospitality and tourism. We are considering several new programs for School Year 2024-2025, including business management and cosmetology. Our school is located in the historic Deanwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C. Position Summary:
The Director of Career Technical Education (CTE) oversees all aspects of the CTE program, including hiring program staff, evaluating CTE teachers, monitoring curriculum implementation, building industry partnerships, and managing the overall implementation of the CTE program. The Director of CTE will ensure a robust CTE program is in place with multiple career pathways and that all students earn one or more industry credentials to support career readiness. In addition to career pathway programs, the Director of CTE will also spearhead the development of a work-based learning program that ensures all students engage in a variety of work-based learning experiences, including job shadowing, internships, and paid employment, among other types. The Director of CTE will also work with the school’s business office to manage CTE grants, pursue additional CTE funding opportunities, and develop industry partnerships to provide students with a variety of career readiness opportunities.
This is a school-based CTE role as opposed to a district-level CTE director role. The primary difference is that the school-based Director of CTE is expected to manage all operational details related to CTE programming and execution.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supervise, observe, and evaluate CTE teachers; supervise the college and career coordinator; and coordinate and participate in the orientation, training, and, if needed, development for CTE teachers. Oversee contract providers of service.
- Work with the business office to prepare and submit CTE reimbursement requests.
- Prepare, submit, and manage the annual Carl Perkins Grant, including ensuring grant guidelines and reporting requirements are met. Searches out and applies for federal, state, and other external sources of funds for CTE programs and activities.
- Prepare specifications and invitations for bids, purchases, supplies, materials, and equipment for CTE programs; supervise their storage, distribution, inventory, and maintenance.
- Lead ongoing curriculum development among CTE programs, in alignment with district curricula, industry council recommendations, and state requirements to ensure IDEA PCS CTE programs engage student interests and meet the current needs of business and industry.
- Serve as a liaison between OSSE and IDEA as well as local, regional, and state committees or organizations to advance career and technical education.
- Work closely with the CEO, the principal, guidance counselors, and other staff to inform staff and encourage student interest in CTE programs within a career pathways framework. Work with staff to support students who may need accommodations or modifications for successful participation in CTE programs.
- Ensure IDEA meets the goals outlined in strategic plans.
- Provide support, research, and guidance to teachers in the development, implementation, and evaluation of CTE programs and career awareness efforts.
- Work with the CEO, the principal, and CTE program teams to develop, monitor, and evaluate Career Pathway Programs of Study, which include: a rigorous curriculum approved by OSSE, alignment of programs of study at IDEA for scholars to gain access to a technical assessment leading to an industry-approved credential for all students completing a program of study.
- Maintain a database of programs, participation, and achievement of industry-based certifications and assure timely submission of program information required by OSSE and PCSB.
- Assist in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of all CTE program(s) in applied learning and career exploration and awareness.
- Provide leadership for the development of specialized CTE opportunities including design and implementation of CTE pathways, work-based learning, and CTE elective courses at IDEA.
- Assist in the recruitment of members of the Industry Council and foster strong relationships with members and their organizations.
- Work in collaboration with the Industry Council, school leaders, and postsecondary education to establish articulation agreement standards, develop agreements, maintain a portfolio of agreements, and continue to develop a portfolio of dual credit and advanced standing agreements for the benefit of students who complete CTE programs of study.
- Expand relationships with trade organizations to foster seamless transitions to apprenticeship programs for trade-bound students.
- Work with district leaders and principals to design, develop, and implement work-based learning opportunities for all students that may include visitations, shadowing, internships, paid employment, and instructional program delivery at worksites.
- Work with the principal and college and career coordinator to provide coordinated opportunities for all students to visit college campuses and explore programs and facilities related to their career interests.
- Provide guidance and advice on the policy decisions necessary to improve access to CTE programs and ensure that all students have access to desirable options that expand rather than limit their postsecondary choices.
- Provide a monthly report to the Chief Executive Officer on the status of CTE including progress on the strategic plan, the effectiveness of programs and their implementation, and a breakout of programs by pathway, student participation, and performance information in the academies and CTE pathways and programs of study.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate the implementation of the Perkins Grant and pursue other funding in support of CTE.
- Recommend, hire, orient, train, and evaluate assigned employees, and monitor and coordinate development of programs. Coordinate CTE contractual services as needed.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 5+ years of experience teaching in a high school CTE program
- 2+ years in a leadership or management role in a CTE program
- Experience in an urban high school setting
