During SY 2024-25, Truth will serve a diverse population of 6th-11th grade students in Washington, DC. Over the next year, Truth will grow to serve students across 6th-12th grades.
Position:
Sojourner Truth PCS is seeking a creative and collaborative special educator to support students with both their math or ELA goals. All of Truth’s Special Education teachers should be comfortable managing caseloads, writing IEPs and tracking progress towards goals, modifying assignments where needed, implementing accommodations, and providing tailored instruction.
The Special Education Teacher will report directly to the Special Education Coordinator and Principal. The Special Education teacher will actively co-teach a classroom of students alongside a core content teacher, and will support students for targeted small group and individual workshops. Truth is looking for Special Education candidates with strong content knowledge who are inspired and excited by our non-traditional structure and for the potential that these innovations have to provide improved opportunities to serve students with disabilities.
Special Education teachers, like all other staff, should be fully invested in Truth’s two Design Principles:
- Students need to be prepared for life, not just for school.
- Each student’s identity, voice, perspectives, and choices matter.
Responsibilities:
- Tailoring daily lessons as needed in order to support students’ advancement towards explicit goals
- Utilizing available data (IEP goals, NWEA MAP scores, PARCC scores, and report card marks) to inform support plans for each student
- Working with the Special Education Coordinator to ensure proper writing and implementation of IEPs and 504 Plans
- Building strong and positive relationships with students and families
- Documenting and maintaining compliance for all mandated and IEP-related support services
- Motivated by the mission to set a national model for a high-quality, urban public Montessori secondary school;
- Knowledge of educational innovations in instructional strategies, alternative assessment methods, blended learning, supports for students with disabilities, and cooperative learning;
- Demonstrated commitment to the potential of all youth to succeed in rigorous educational settings;
- Training, or willingness to seek training in the Montessori method;
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree preferred
