Overview:
General Description
This role supports the Mission and Values of Boys Hope Girls Hope by supporting the various needs of the Scholar Success Program, including school year and summer programs. Major responsibilities include program support, direct support to scholars, activities surrounding academic success and community involvement, and administrative tasks related to ensure efficient program operation. Working in collaboration with program managers and volunteers, the Program Support Specialist directly assists scholars by actively participating in youth transportation, carrying out data entry responsibilities, monitoring their academic progress, and co-facilitating programming activities with the High School and Middle School scholars when required or needed.
Major Responsibilities
I. Academic Monitoring & Support coordination
Asist program managers in monitoring student academic progress and needs
Communicate with tutors any specific information regarding scholar academic needs, including providing written direction based on scholar’s weekly assignments or in response to directives from teachers
Help supervise scholars during tutoring, learning center time when needed.
Develop and monitor academic improvement plans for scholars, and academic goals for service plans in coordination with the Program Manager.
II. Direct Services to Scholars
Identify, track and promote age-appropriate essential experiences like community service activities to supplement school-based learning
Plan, coordinate and participate in community service opportunities for individual scholars and groups of scholars
Maintain, and role model for scholars positive relations with neighbors, community groups, schools, authorities, peers and parents of scholars
Develop, Assist and Co-facilitate academic and enrichment programming activities, such as study groups, and college readiness workshops and BHGH Curriculum (e.g., life skills training, character development).
III. Support Activities
Assist with the collection and entry of relevant scholar data, ensuring all required documentation of activities and academic progress is updated in a timely and accurate fashion.
Enter and maintain accurate student data and records in program records
Support the development of scholars in accordance with individual scholar service plans
Escort and transport youth to and from program activities when needed
Will perform a variety of support functions as needed to support the overall success of the program.
Other Duties
- Attend regular staff meetings and professional development sessions as required
- Transporting scholars in vehicles including 15 passenger van
- Boys Hope Girls Hope is a small, privately funded organization relying on a competent, motivated staff to accomplish its mission of nurturing and guiding motivated young people in need to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others. This requires flexibility and the willingness of all staff members to occasionally participate in other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- Must have valid AZ driver’s license and ability to transport scholars as needed, complete errands including lifting/transporting up to 40 pounds.
- Must pass state and federal background checks and other screening required for working with youth
- The position will work primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor activities.
- The schedule for this position will primarily be weekdays during after-school hours, with occasional weekend or evening hours as needed.
- This position has a non-traditional work schedule which includes evenings and some weekends. Specific hours are based on program needs.
Qualifications Experience & Skills Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred
- At least one year of experience working with youth in an educational or community-based setting
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents, and community partners
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion
- Comfortable driving and navigating in a 15-passenger van
- Strong computer/software skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
- Professional appearance, attitude and representation of BHGH necessary at all times
