Workforce Development Coordinator

FLSA Status: Exempt
Hours: In person 9:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday. Two flexible days
of 11:00 to 7:00 pm to provide services and support to the evening program.
Purpose of position:
The Workforce Development Coordinator was established to meet the strategic priorities of The Next Step’s strategic plan by making direct connections with employers and training and certification opportunities for our students. This newly created position will serve as the primary liaison to ensure the school is providing workforce services in order to provide opportunities for high-wage, high-growth career pathways to provide a living wage (Strategy 3 of the strategic plan).
Qualifications
● Associate’s degree from an accredited institution required, Bachelor’s degree is highly
preferred.
● Must be eligible for and attain the Career Workforce Coordinator Professional
certification by 18 months of employment in the role.
● Bilingual in Spanish is necessary.
● Strong verbal and written communication skills.
● At least 2 years of experience working with students, preferably alternative and/or adult
students in an educational environment.
● At least 3 years of experience in workforce development, human services, community
organizing, or other fields related to workforce development.
● Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
● Understand the DC workforce landscape
● Skills in Microsoft Office, Google Suites, and other applications.
● Understanding, accepting and supportive of racial, cultural and linguistic differences.
Key Responsibilities:
Workforce Coaching, Curriculum & Marketing
● Provide career development and supportive services to students who are unemployed or
underemployed.
● Develop effective working relationships with employers and maintain regular
communication to ensure student success through onsite job visits.
● Support internal and external job fairs by ensuring students are aware and participate in
them.
● Ensure students are meeting job requirements and the school is supporting necessary
job skills and expectations.
● Create professional development and employment plans with students.
● Provide internal and secure external professional development opportunities for student
employment plans.
● Through coordination within the CLS department, facilitate and/or ensure job readiness
programming, such as resume and cover letter development, digital literacy related to
employment skills, professional etiquette, and coordination of workforce training by
external partners.
● Work with the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) to ensure career and workforce
development lessons are blended into the classroom instruction (including Passport To
Success lessons).
● Develop a resource and training guide for all workforce, job readiness, and certification
programs.
● Through coordination and cross collaboration with CLS & Director of Development &
Strategic Partnerships, participation in marketing design and promotional materials.
● Develop and maintain a workforce event schedule/calendar for publishing.
● Organize and lead the summer workforce program.
● Familiarity and understanding of the DC labor market projections and job outlook.
Data Management
● Maintain complete and accurate information in student files, Quickbase and Naviance.
● Track all workforce and certification programs.
● Create and maintain internal benchmarks and a dashboard to track progress.
● Develop and submit periodic reports to the CLS Director detailing progress, challenges
and recommendations.

● Consistently implement school-wide expectations in classrooms and common areas

● Participate actively in special events, including field trips, community days, and college
tours, graduations, Monday community meetings and staff meetings.
● Participate actively in school responsibilities such as hallway and lunch supervision as
needed.
● Participate in assessment administration as needed throughout the school year.
● Work cooperatively with colleagues to develop and implement effective and relevant
policies.
● Adhere to school policies as described in personnel manual and/or staff handbook.
● Reflect upon performance, set goals for improvement, and take advantage of training
opportunities to learn and implement effective strategies.
● Maintain an organized, clean, and inviting work area.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $66,000.00 per year
