Houston in Action is a collaborative network of community-based organizations committed to building a stronger democracy and making sure every voice is heard. The AAPI Table is dedicated to empowering and mobilizing the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in Houston through nonpartisan electoral education and get out the vote (GOTV) efforts.
About the AAPI Table
In the last decade, the Asian American population has grown faster than any other racial or ethnic group in the nine-county greater Houston area. The AAPI Table has a common vision and action plan for strengthening civic engagement for diverse AAPI organizations involved in all aspects of electoral mobilization by focusing on the ten elements of integrated voter engagement. The AAPI Table envisions our community to be one in which all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders fully participate and have access to the democratic process. The AAPI Table will also forge collaborative connections with other BIPOC communities and organizations within Houston in Action (HiA) working to empower underrepresented communities.

Job Summary
The Community Organizer will be assigned to a partner organization within the Houston in Action AAPI Table. This role involves coordinating and implementing community-based get-out-the-vote strategies, organizing events, and leading other initiatives to increase electoral participation among AAPI communities. The ideal candidate is passionate about civic engagement, has strong organizational skills, and can effectively mobilize diverse communities in a nonpartisan manner.
Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with AAPI community members, leaders, and organizations.
- Conduct outreach activities to raise awareness about the importance of voting and civic participation.
- Organize and facilitate community meetings, forums, and events focused on nonpartisan electoral education.
- Recruit and manage volunteers for various outreach and GOTV activities for the assigned partner organization.
Electoral Education and GOTV Efforts
- Develop and distribute educational materials about voter registration, election processes, and nonpartisan candidate information.
- Coordinate canvassing efforts.
- Implement GOTV strategies, including phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, and digital outreach, ensuring all activities are strictly nonpartisan.
Organization Meetings and Volunteer Recruitment
- Plan, schedule, and lead organizational meetings to discuss strategies and progress.
- Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to support community engagement and GOTV efforts.
Partnership and Collaboration
- Work closely with the assigned partner organization to align activities with their mission and goals.
- Collaborate with other community organizers and Houston in Action AAPI Table members.
- Represent the organization at community events, meetings, and coalitions.
Data Management and Reporting
- Track and report on community engagement and GOTV activities.
- Maintain accurate records of outreach efforts and participant information for the assigned partner organization.
- Provide regular updates and reports to supervisors and the AAPI Table.
Public Policy Education
- Stay informed about local, state, and national policies affecting the AAPI community.
- Conduct educational meetings and prepare and distribute educational materials to inform the community about public policy issues in a nonpartisan manner.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, economics, social work, public administration, or a related field is preferred but not required.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in community organizing, electoral campaigns, or related work.
Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
- Fluency in an AAPI language is a plus.
