This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program. The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide the services necessary to perform onsite General Surgery Physician Services to eligible beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, VA Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS), Fresno, CA. The physician(s)’ care shall cover the range of General Surgery services as would be provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility and the standard of care shall be of a quality, meeting or exceeding currently recognized national standards as established by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include General Surgery services in outpatient, inpatient, and Emergency Department settings tasks include but are not limited to:
- Operative Services: Provide comprehensive clinical General Surgery services including a full range of General Surgery procedures.
- Intraoperative Follow-up: physician(s) shall be present in the operating suite for all General Surgery procedures.
- Postoperative Follow-up: Physician rounds shall be conducted on postoperative General Surgery patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and on the wards.
- Resident Supervision: physician(s) performing the services shall be responsible for residents.
- Clinical Direction & Oversight: provide clinical direction to and oversight of residents/fellows consistent with current accreditation guidelines, clinical research, protocol development, data management of protocols, quality assurance conferences and meetings, and affiliate /VA staff meetings
- Resident Patient Care: perform any administrative duties relative to documentation of resident training, as required and directed by the VA COS or designated representative.

- Call coverage: after-hours call Monday through Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:30 AM and twenty-four (24) hour coverage on weekends and Holidays. Rotated with 1 or more physicians
Job Profile
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
- Current, full and unrestricted license in one or more state, commonwealth, territory or DC.
- Applicants who have ever had a license restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily revoked, voluntarily surrendered pending action or denied upon application are not eligible.
- Board Certified/Board Eligible by the American Board of Surgery
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) (Copy of Cert is required)
- Certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent (Copy of Cert is required)
- DEA License (Copy of license is required for submission)
- Previous VA or Military experience strongly preferred but not required.
Education Required:
- Doctor of Medicine degree or equivalent required. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges: Liaison Committee on Medical Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Physical Requirements:
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/clinic work environment.
- Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
- May require bending, stooping and lifting to 25 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications:
- US Citizen (Permanent residents can be discussed on a case by case basis)
- Must be local or relocate to project site for the duration of the contract.
- Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance and pass VHA credentialing process
