Job Description – Plant Food Safety Manager
Essential Functions and responsibilities:
Directly responsible for ensuring BARE BEANS FOODS located in Rupert, ID is compliant with both internal and external audit requirements (HACCP, SQF, Customer Audits, FDA, and other food safety regulations and certifications), lead programs, and quality systems implementation to ensure overall regulatory compliance. The Plant Food Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and implementing all aspects of food safety programs within the organization. This role requires a deep understanding of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles, as well as experience with Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards. The individual in this position will ensure compliance with all relevant food safety regulations and standards, conduct inspections and audits, and develop and maintain documentation related to food safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain food safety programs in accordance with HACCP and SQF standards.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and processes to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and standards.
- Lead and coordinate food safety training programs for employees, ensuring understanding and adherence to protocols. Provide ongoing employee training for HACCP, SOPs, and GMPs.
- Investigate and address any food safety incidents or concerns, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to continuously improve food safety processes and procedures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation related to food safety protocols, including records of inspections, audits, and training activities.
- Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices related to food safety, and implement necessary changes to ensure compliance.
- Participate in internal and external audits, providing support and documentation as needed.
- Manage QA and sanitation activities, review and develop SOP’s, train plant employees in all aspects of food safety and minimize off-specification and waste of finished products.
- Gather, monitor, analyze, and prepare reports on food safety, food quality, sanitation effectiveness, supporting information, and related data.
- Provide Support and training to QA, Sanitation, and Operations employees with the objective of meeting food safety and quality requirements while maintaining production efficiency.
- Develop, validate, verify, implement, maintain, and review SQF system, including food safety and food quality. Take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the SQF system, in accordance with SQF code. Communicate essential information to relevant personnel for an effective implantation and maintenance of the SQF system.
- Manage Environmental Monitoring Program.
- Liaison to regulatory authorities, customers, internal, and third-party audits.
- Implementation and maintenance of the quality management system, including HACCP to ensure minimum defects and waste of finished products.
- FMSA preventative controls.
- Translate and incorporate Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) into operational practice.
- Critically analyze processes and procedures to identify and assess potential food safety hazards and quality defects.
- Ensure that food safety and quality assurance programs are properly implemented and maintained by following regulatory guidelines through auditing, verifications of programs, product quality control, and data trending.
- Assist in Research and Development activities.
- Review all Quality Checklists for accuracy, update or create new checklists as needed.
- Verify, create, and update labels based on the new requirements.
- Review all production checklists for accuracy.
- Review SOPs for accuracy, update or create new SOPs as needed.
- Assist with the equipment Clean-In-Place processes (CIP). Provide employee training as required.
- Monitor the use of chemicals, ensure safe operating procedures are being followed. Managing and ordering required chemicals, parts and supplies for uninterrupted cleaning activities.
- Review all charts from the CIP areas and systems. Perform test for cleanliness.
- Build and foster a strong food safety team culture.
- Additional duties as directed by the Senior Leadership Team.
2. Knowledge and Skills Required
- Food Science certification or Bachelor’s degree from a recognized educational institution or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification in SQF, HACCP, GMP.
- Thorough understanding of food safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience in food safety or quality assurance roles within the food industry.
- Advanced level in analytical skills, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented and organized, with ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
- Advanced level in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Bi-lingual English/Spanish a plus
