Position Description
The product engineer utilizes engineering disciplines to perform project and product development activities. Dialogue and communication will be internal to the organization as well as external with key customers. This position will require the successful candidate to apply their educational learning towards real world challenges and will allow growth into advanced product engineering and program management positions. The product engineer will possess leadership and technological responsibilities which include establishing timing, budgets, product design, and development of advanced technologies while ensuring that safety is a priority for all activities related to the product and or project.
Position Responsibilities
The project engineer is responsible for product development technical support, and management of the plastic injection molds during the design and development phase of the tool as well as any ongoing customer requested engineering changes.
Customer Interface
· Interface with the customer on the design of the parts to optimize injection molding, decoration and assembly tooling and manufacturability and feedback on design modifications that would reduce tooling and manufacturing costs.
· Management of the customer injection mold budget and guidance on changes that impact the cost and delivery timing of the molds.
· Acquire customer signoff for steel, rough cut and final cut approvals.
· Explain supplier requested design requests to document any deviation of the product from the customer print
Tool Shop Interface
· Manage part data used by the tool shop to ensure it is the correct design level and revision based on the customer direction.
· Communicate any product design concessions requested by the tool shop to the customer. Provide customer with impacts to cost and timing if they are not able to make design concessions.
· Provide documented authorization for tooling phases; steel purchase, rough cut, water, ejection, final cut et al.
· Meet with the tool shops on a regular cadence to follow the tool build timing and any issues that occur during the build.
· Provide quotes for any costs or timing changes to the original quotes.
· Attend tool trials, evaluate and recommend improvements, and provide sign-off for tool shop on tool approvals using the design check list.
Launch Team interface
· Lead advanced product development and E&D activity in assigned area with capability to mobilize innovative solutions for market growth
· Lead the review of lessons learned/best practices of other programs and documents new learning from each project.
· Provide input to the product testing plan and results, including development of the DVP&R with the customer, procurement of test equipment, writing of work instructions, completion of testing, reporting of results, and developing appropriate reaction plans.
· Coordinate mold flows and reviews results with processors and tool room personnel prior to first shots in-house.
· Coordinate trials with operations staff, material supplier and launch team
· Attend all in plant samples from first shots through run at rate
· Document and provide feedback to tool shops of any issues found during production samples
· Complete timely posts in PLM to new CAD file data links for the team’s access
· Procure injection mold information for Engineering Change requests
· Participate in launch team meetings and works to resolve any open issues
· Direct sample and prototype build for pre-production customer requests
· Work with tooling, processing, packaging and secondary operations to obtain parts acceptable for PPAP.
· Resolve issues related to dimensional compliance to customer prints for molded products. Assists processors, layout technicians, material suppliers, manufacturing engineers, packaging engineer and others as needed to identify root cause and make appropriate changes to achieve parts within tolerance.
