The Norwood Civil Service Commission is accepting applications for the position of Water Meter Reader. As a part of the application process, there will be a civil service test to be held on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 6 pm at the Norwood Police Training Center, 2600 Park Avenue, Norwood, OH 45212. A valid Driver's License is required.
Summary:
The successful candidate will read customer water meters according to scheduled routes. Records readings on a hand-held computer. Watches for, investigates, and reports any water leaks or other irregularities in meter service. Works directly with customers to gain access to meters, resolve reading issues, and answers questions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows an assigned route, either on foot or by driving a car and enters customers’ homes or businesses.
- Complete daily meter reading assignments in a timely and accurate manner
- Completes data entry into software system
- Greets and converses with customers, answers customers questions.
- Obtains readings from each water meter on the assigned route in both inside and outside settings.
- Verifies correct addresses.
- Observes and reports any obvious problems or proper uses of the water lines or meters as well as any physical hazards on the assigned route.
- Perform miscellaneous office duties such as filing and retrieving, answering the phone, calculating percentages, obtaining account numbers for specific premises, etc.
- Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance; may be required to work extra hours, evening hours, weekends and/or holidays as required; due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the employee must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so.
- Assist with other duties in the Water Department.

- Qualifications & Requirements:
- High school diploma is required.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of operational characteristics of water meter reading equipment; methods and techniques of water meter reading preferred
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Ability to: Walk each workday in all types of weather, including climbing up and down steps, ladders, into and out of meter pits, and maneuvering around obstacles; lift heavy objects such as meter pit covers, garage doors, cellar doors, etc., see small numbers and to read small dials by flashlight; copy readings accurately onto meter reading card; read information on meter reading card so as to locate, read, and copy reading in a safe, efficient, and accurate manner; greet and converse with customers in a civil and courteous manner. operate Water Works car in a safe and courteous manner; write brief, accurate, and legible reports to supervisors on specific problem. observe and report safety hazards; remain calm in stressful situations; learn way around the city (i.e., routes, neighborhoods, etc.); maintain honesty and integrity.
