Guidance Counselor
Wonder Homeschool Center is looking for an experienced Guidance Counselor to join our group of three full-time teachers and 25 homeschool students. Our ideal guidance counselor is someone with:
- significant experience as a guidance counselor at the middle or high-school levels and/or significant experience working with homeschool students in a high school setting
- a passion for and experience working with gifted students and students with learning differences, including specific experience relative to securing testing accommodations
- possession of a current and valid South Carolina certification in guidance and counseling at specific level preferred
Students
Our current students range from 5th through 8th* grades, and are "gifted", highly curious students who love learning, but also have learning differences (eg. Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, ASD, anxiety, executive functioning issues) that can cause frustration and challenge.
*We'll be expanding to offer 9th grade during the 2024-25 school year and adding one high school grade each year for 3 years following.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate is someone who, first and foremost, loves education, but hates everything that's wrong with our public school system.
The ability to simultaneously work with students spanning five grade ranges with an even broader range of abilities is critical. We need someone who can take the lead with our guidance program, and would love someone with experience in alternative educational settings, ideally homeschool, and outside-the-box-thinking.
We are looking for that special someone - someone who believes that curiosity is the key to learning and public schools are missing the mark on supporting creativity. We believe in making mistakes, in having a growth mindset, and that life skills and social-emotional development are as important as science and math. We want someone who can support our efforts to maximizes student learning opportunities, make learning FUN, implement experiential learning, and do all the above at differentiated, ability- and grade-based levels.
Key Responsibilities
Our guidance counselor will be responsible for
- working directly with students to monitor academic progress, and counsel and guide students in developing and maintaining an Individual Graduation Plan that meets the statutory requirements for graduation of homeschool students, provides for the promotion of academic growth, and considers the student's unique post-graduate plans
- consulting with teachers relative to homeschool requirements for credits, coursework, and overall compliance with homeschool statutes, as well as in regard to identifying and meeting the developmental needs of our students
- consulting with parents to address areas of concern, provide guidance regarding relative to homeschool planning and statutory requirements
- teaching study skills, life skills, and/or wellness classes and/or other relevant courses of interest
- coordinating parent/family education programs and serving as a liaison for community referral resources
- assist with test preparation, enrollment/registration, accommodation requests, etc
Bachelors Degree and guidance counselor experience required.
