Primary Objective:
The Food Safety & Sanitation Manager oversees the execution of corporate and local company policies, procedures, and training elements in three key areas of responsibility to include food safety, food plant sanitation and occupational health and safety. The individual in this position will effectively work with division management to ensure that key food safety / sanitation / health & safety objectives and goals are achieved. This position reports directly to the Director of Food Safety, Quality and Compliance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Serves as the backup to the Director of Food Safety, Quality and Compliance.
- Serves as the backup to the Quality Inspector.
- Manages two facilities – Goshen/South Bend.
- Manages, motivates and evaluates sanitation and quality members, provides clear communication and expectations of the job responsibilities. Validates activities based on the MSS.
- Schedules and trains cleaning crews along with warehouse team members in regards food safety.
- Works closely with Warehouse and Transportation team to ensure food safety policies are followed.
- Ensures compliance with corporate standards and systems to monitor food safety and facility cleanliness.
- Manages housekeeping activities, provides clear communication and expectation of job responsibility. Validation is conducted through random visual observations.
- Responsible for reporting food safety problems to personnel with authority to initiate action.
- Makes recommendations to upper management concerning frequency of cleaning.
- Participates during the monthly food safety inspections, communicates non-conformances to the team and validates progress.
- Maintains and writes detailed clean up procedures and SSOP’s for the facilities.
- Troubleshoots persistent sanitations issues to identify deficiencies in sanitation program.
- Assists and manages Food Safety Preventive Controls Program, inclusive of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plan, pre-requisite programs, Food Safety Policies, and specific SOPs. Completes verification activities associated with all Preventive Controls programs. Ensure compliance with applicable food safety regulatory requirements (Federal, State/ and, Local).
- Assists in any third-party audits, customer audits, FDA, USDA inspections.
- Conducts verification of monitoring devices.
- Ensure all necessary verification processes are signed and dated at time of review. Verify all required paperwork is accurately completed and verified on a daily basis by signature and date.
- Stay current with food safety regulations, laws and industry trends to ensure compliance and maintain certifications.
- Conducts team meetings with all members of the department at least on a weekly basis.
- Drives continues improvement by analyzing operational practices and proposes changes.
- Works closely with the pest control technician to close any open non-conformances and address potential pest infestation concerns.
- Oversees housekeeping practices of both offices and meets with the housekeeping service provider at least on a bi-weekly basis.
- Ability to support in other requests as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
- Bachelor of Master's Degree in Food Service, Operations Management or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of USDA and FDA standards.
- 3-5 years in management handling: hire, termination, discipline, training/development, employee relations.
- Ability to work remote over the weekends as needed.
- Ability to pivot priorities, and multitask.
- Ability to work 80% in warehouse ambient, 20% office space.
- Ability to travel from one location to another.
- Knowledge of Food Safety Standards such as HARPC, HACCP.
- Certified in HACCP and PCQI (preferred).
