NYCSBUS (NYC School Bus Umbrella Services Inc.) is a not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have Individualized Educational Programs. It operates approximately 800 school bus routes throughout all of NYC with a staff of approximately 1,800 people from six locations with a budget of $190 million. NYCSBUS’s goal is to radically improve student bus transportation by innovating in all areas and providing unprecedented transparency in bus operations to school districts that outsource this service.
Under the supervision of the NYCSBUS Director of Safety and Training, the Bus Safety Officer observes driver and attendant conduct to ensure compliance with DOL and OPT rules and student safety while on our buses. Will respond to complaints and follow the situation to resolution. Recommends and facilitates necessary training and retraining where necessary.
Primary Responsibilities

2. Identify and Solve Problems
Evaluate the performance of Drivers and Attendants by riding along on routes, providing guidance and instruction based on observations.
Communicate with school officials, support staff and paraeducators to identify areas of concern regarding Driver or Attendant performance, and/or student conduct. Work with the Safety Supervisor to investigate and resolve all matters.
Complete investigative reports not limited to observation and suggestive interventions.
Recommend corrective action related to service delivery methods, procedures, equipment, or facilities to address unsafe conditions.
Communicate with all parties involved when an investigation is completed.
3. Provide Operational Support to the Depots and Bus Operations
Provide operational assistance to depot management and NYCSBUS leadership in daily operations and during emergency situations.
Work in conjunction with Safety Leadership and the depot management teams to perform other duties as assigned.
In rare instances, act as a bus driver to complete a route.
Education and/or Experience
3 years of experience delivering behind-the-wheel bus driver training, with at least 2 years in a safety compliance role, preferably in a school setting.
High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by New York law.
Training and/or certification in Reasonable Suspicion is required.
Training and/or certification in CPR and First Aid is strongly preferred.
Valid New York Driver's License with a clean driving record. Must be willing to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements within 90 days of hire.
Qualifications
Knowledge of bus driving safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of pupil transportation planning, scheduling and route development.
Working knowledge of New York State and New York City Departments of Education’s rules and regulations, local policies, procedures, and expectations is helpful.
Good observation skills related to commercial motor vehicle driving techniques, as well as the ability to monitor and correct driver behavior effectively.
Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other professionals in a team setting.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of information at all times.
Ability to organize data and compile reports.
Proficient English language verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual language skills – especially Spanish, French, and/or Haitian Creole – are strongly preferred.
Must be able to respond to safety emergencies at all times.
Must be willing to work at any NYCSBUS depot based on the operational and staffing needs of the company.
Physical Requirements
Regularly stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and climb steps.
Lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 25 pounds
Observe and communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing to observe students and NYCSBUS employees, equipment and surrounding driving conditions.
Frequent exposure to non-climate controlled and outside weather conditions that can be cold, hot, rainy and/or snowy.
Work safely in conditions where noise, moving machinery, exposure to dust, fumes and/or gas may be present.
During busy seasons such as the opening of the fall and summer school season, may be required to work longer than normally scheduled hours.
