SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Youth Development Specialist helps
facilitate Program workshops, and supports the incorporation of youth leadership into the
program. The Youth Specialist will help provide activities that keep youth connected to
school and the community they live in. They will help youth engage in organized
activities that build social emotional skills. Youth and their parents/caregivers understand
the importance of education. YD services are designed to promote academic
achievement, positive cultural identity (acculturation), a sense of belonging, youth
development as well as provide social, emotional and leadership opportunities that
increase the personal, academic, and social skills youth need to be successful in life.
Target populations are African-Americans, Latinos and other youth of color ages
15-19.The Youth Leadership Program will be facilitated primarily in Central Brooklyn
and Queens, in high need immigrant communities. This space was created for youth
development services to provide employment training, and skill-building opportunities.
The Youth Specialist will support special events, field trips, workshops, classes and
events for youth and their families; ensuring that a safe, positive, and respectful
environment is maintained throughout the 7 week course.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Lead and ensure successful recruitment for 60 unduplicated youth
● Ensure programming promotes participants who are connected to school/and or the
community they live in. Youth engage in organized activities that build social
emotional skills. Youth and their parents/caregivers understand the importance of
education.
● Model standards of behavior and discipline for the purpose of ensuring the safety and
wellbeing of all participants.
● Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities, and events.
● Develop and facilitate activities around Social emotional development which include;
teach effective communication skills, teach conflict resolution skills, increase
self-acceptance and positive affiliations, increase self-esteem and critical thinking and
provide academic support.
● Support participants and encourage retention in the program through relational
outreach efforts such as: reminder calls, post-group check in, etc.
● Develop and maintain relationships with Schools: school visits, recruitment, etc.
● Works with a specific group of children as assigned by the Program Manager; teaches
and supervises those children in program activities and on field trips
● Plans and organizes a variety of enriching and age appropriate program activities and
in accordance with program policies and procedures Community
● Provides an environment that ensures the safety and well-being of all students
● Engage and build relationships with youth/teens in the program appropriately, act as a
role model, creating a safe, welcoming environment for youth/teens.
● Help with activity set-up and clean up; utilize youth volunteers as appropriate.
● Provide students with individual attention and academic support.
● Coordinate youth participation in panels, workshops, and speaking engagements at
relevant
● community events
● Collaborates with the Program Manager and other program staff for the purpose of
implementing and maintaining services and/or programs.Coordinate youth

● Communicates program policies and enforcement procedures to students
● Maintains classroom equipment, work area, participant files/records, and attendance
records
● Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facilities and equipment.
● Interact professionally and appropriately with students, parents, teachers, school staff,
and program staff
● Reports observations and incidents to ensure a safe, positive and healthy atmosphere
for participants and service providers is maintained in the Youth Development
Program; help ensure established rules of conduct are enforced consistently so all
youth, families, staff, and visitors are treated with respect & dignity.
● Help ensure that all Youth Development property (including games, equipment,
common areas, and supplies) is properly maintained and respected.
● Participates in all staff meetings
● Provide regular updates and report to supervisor as requested, as well as performing
other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and Education:
● Experience working with Elementary and/or Middle School age children in an organized setting.
● Energetic, youth oriented, and resourceful, personal skills
● Able to manage difficult and stressful situations, effectively and calmly
● A boat to model, appropriate and respectful conflict, resolution skills
● Able to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers participants
● Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
● Availability to work with some flexibility for occasional evening or weekend events
● TB test clearance
● Background Screening Clearance
