We are seeking a dedicated American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to join our educational team for the 2024-2025 school year. As an ASL Interpreter, you will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their peers, teachers, and staff. This position is a contract role covering the 42-week school year, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Responsibilities:
- Provide interpretation and transliteration services to deaf or hard-of-hearing students in educational settings, ensuring effective communication in classrooms, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.
- Interpret spoken language into ASL and vice versa, maintaining the content, tone, and style of communication.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to ensure an inclusive learning environment for students.
- Foster independence and advocacy skills among deaf or hard-of-hearing students regarding their communication needs.
- Remain neutral and confidential in all aspects of interpreting assignments.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records of interpreting services provided, including logs of assignments and student progress notes.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance interpreting skills and stay updated on best practices in educational interpreting.
Requirements:
- Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent national certification as an ASL Interpreter.
- Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Education, or related field preferred.
- Proven experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings, preferably in K-12 schools.
- Strong knowledge of ASL linguistics and deaf culture.
- Ability to interpret complex subject matter in educational contexts, including science, mathematics, literature, and social studies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Sensitivity to the needs and experiences of deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.
Work Schedule:
- Contract duration: 42 weeks (covering the academic school year).
- Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
