Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team as an Apheresis Nurse in Rochester, NY. The Apheresis RN will be responsible for performing therapeutic apheresis procedures and providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing a variety of blood-related therapies, including plasma exchange, red blood cell exchange, and stem cell collection. The ideal candidate will have advanced clinical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centered care in a specialized clinical setting.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients' medical history, laboratory results, and vascular access status to determine eligibility for apheresis procedures and ensure patient safety.
- Educate patients and their families about the purpose, process, and potential risks and benefits of apheresis therapy, obtaining informed consent prior to procedures.
- Perform venous access procedures, including insertion and maintenance of central venous catheters, peripheral venous catheters, and arteriovenous fistulas, ensuring optimal blood flow rates and minimizing the risk of complications.
- Set up and operate apheresis equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and established protocols, ensuring proper calibration, priming, and monitoring of blood flow parameters throughout procedures.
- Monitor patients' vital signs, hemodynamic status, and laboratory values during apheresis procedures, recognizing and promptly addressing any adverse reactions or complications.
- Administer anticoagulant and other medications as prescribed, closely monitoring patients for signs of bleeding, thrombosis, or allergic reactions.
- Document all aspects of patient care accurately and comprehensively in electronic medical records, including procedural details, patient responses, medications administered, and post-procedure instructions.
- Provide post-procedure care and monitoring, including assessment of vascular access sites, vital signs, laboratory values, and patient comfort, and initiate appropriate interventions as needed.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team members, including hematologists, nephrologists, transfusion medicine specialists, and laboratory personnel, to coordinate patient care, address clinical issues, and optimize treatment outcomes.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff education programs, and regulatory compliance activities to enhance the quality and safety of apheresis services and promote positive patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Qualifications:
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of New York.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in critical care, hematology/oncology, or a related specialty area, with proficiency in vascular access management and intravenous therapy.
- Certification in apheresis nursing (CPTC) preferred.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Demonstrated proficiency in critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making in high-stress situations.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards, guidelines, and best practices related to apheresis procedures and patient safety.
- Ability to adapt to a fast-paced clinical environment and prioritize tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail.
