The New Family Home Visits Initiative (NFHV) is an expanded program that builds upon the Newborn Home Visiting Program established in 2004. The NFHV Program contributes to the citywide health equity goal by:
- Identifying maternal health needs during pregnancy or soon after childbirth
- Preparing families for delivery and a new baby
- Connecting families to essential services for the well-being of mothers, children, and families
The program also includes International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) who play a crucial role in ensuring successful breastfeeding outcomes. IBCLCs:
- Provide in-home or virtual consultations for breastfeeding support
- Offer practical support within their assigned geographic area
- Connect clients to community resources for sustained breastfeeding
- Review referred cases and communicate with assigned staff
- Engage clients according to program protocol
- Support professional development of program staff in lactation
- Develop and deliver breastfeeding training sessions
- Present IBCLC updates during case reviews and meetings
Preferred skills for staff include the ability to assess postpartum needs, manage chronic disease requirements, assist families with antenatal and birthing experiences, and provide support for pain assessment, newborn care, and infant communication. IBCLC Certification is a preferred qualification. Staff responsibilities also include conducting client assessments, facilitating referrals for mental health services, collaborating within a multidisciplinary team, serving as family advocates, performing health assessments, maintaining client confidentiality, and documenting interactions in the database system
