About us:
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
Position Summary:
This position focuses on migratory birds and their habitats. The incumbent will build a network and gain real-world experience conducting environmental education (EE) programing, outreach and communications, and outdoor recreation/visitor services programs in and around Houston. Working with USFWS staff and partners, they will: conduct EE programs and activities for youth aged K-12 at Houston Parks and Recreation community centers; develop outreach and education materials related to migratory birds and their habitat; participate in biological monitoring in an urban setting; and support special events hosted by partners to engage the public in conservation.
Primary Duties:
- Develop and deliver informal and formal EE programs specific to migratory birds for youth with limited access to nature, including those participating in programming at Houston Parks and Recreation community centers and Ronald McDonald House.
- Develop a social media campaign for migratory birds, including creating digital media products and graphics for outreach and education.
- Work with partners focused on migratory bird issues, including the Lights Out and Outdoor Cats campaigns.
- Participate in special events and engage the public in migratory bird conservation.
- Support and engage in biological monitoring activities as available.
Marginal Duties:
- Participate in training for program-related skills and job shadowing to build program-related skills and certifications.
- Capture video and photos for social media.
- Maintain program materials and tools, including vehicles, EE materials and more.

Member Benefits:
$520 per week living allowance
$1,100 one-time relocation allowance
$80 per week commuter allowance
This position qualifies for an AmeriCorps Education Award.
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
It is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
