Busy Outpatient Surgical facility (ASC) with excellent benefit package, no call, no holidays, and no weekends.
The primary function of this position is to assist the surgeon and assistant for all pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient procedures completed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. May be cross trained to other duties within the surgery department, but outside the normal curriculum of surgical care. (ex: OR housekeeping chores, Central Sterile processing, transporting as requested by charge personnel.
Position Qualifications:
- Graduate of Technical College, or equivalent, with accredited Surgical Technologist curricula
- Surgical Technologies certification required
- 1-2 years scrub experience in multi-specialty surgery center, or hospital setting, preferred.
- BLS certification
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Assists with the preparation and progression of surgical procedures.
- Gathers and assembles supplies, instruments, and equipment appropriate to each surgical procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development as it relates to specific age groups of patients in order to deliver appropriate care.
- Inspects or tests instruments and equipment to ensure its sterility and proper functioning prior to the procedure. Notifies the circulator, or sterile processing tech of any improperly processed or malfunctioning instruments or equipment.
- Anticipates the surgeon’s needs. Passes appropriate sterile instruments and supplies smoothly.
- Practices strict aseptic technique. Recognizes and corrects any breaks in technique.
- Performs appropriate sponge, needle and instrument counts with the circulator.
- Facilitates turnover time.
- Communicates any special needs or occurrences during the procedure to the circulator.
- Maintains composure under stressful conditions.
- Demonstrates effective response to life threatening situations including performance of CPR.
Demonstrates knowledge of safe work practices:
- Implements appropriate infection control measures and uses Standard Precautions. Wears gloves or other protective attire when necessary.
- Appropriately handles and disposes of sharps and other hazardous materials.
- Reports and/or corrects safety hazards.
- Understands and follows fire protocol and disaster and evacuation plans.
- Understands that the work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Uses good body mechanics and ergonomics.
Demonstrates financial responsibility.
- Understands costs, carefully uses supplies, and introduces and supports ideas for reducing costs.
- Restocks supplies maintaining appropriate par levels.
- Makes productive use of down time and adapts to schedule changes.
- Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.
Communicates effectively, demonstrates teamwork, and provides exceptional quality and service.
- Demonstrates knowledge of HIPAA regulations including the use and disclosure of patient’s Bill of Rights.
- Communicates openly and frequently with OR Manager.
- Is responsive to the service needs of staff, physicians, patients and visitors.
- Communicates in a polite and courteous manner with all staff, physicians, patients and visitors.
- Participates in projects including staff education and orientation of new personnel.
- Works effectively with and supports the ideas of others. Shares knowledge and skills with co-workers.
