Quail International is the largest quail processing company in the US. The company sells fresh, and frozen ready-to-cook quail products in all 50 states. The company’s processing plant is a quail slaughtering, processing and packing facility operated under the regulations of the Georgia State Department of Agriculture and the US Department of Agriculture. The company is headquartered in Greensboro, GA.
The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for the proper operation of all plant equipment and facilities, including slaughtering, processing, packaging and all plant buildings and grounds. This position reports to the Plant Manager. The specific position objectives and duties/responsibilities are set forth below:
Position Objectives:
The following are the key objectives for the position:
- To proactively maintain equipment and facility in a condition that allows production to sustain an efficient operation, and avoid all unscheduled equipment downtime.
- To respond immediately and diligently to emergencies and breakdowns.
- To eliminate time losses caused by malfunctioning machines, facility or devices trough preventative maintenance activities. Ensure the scheduling of preventative maintenance and supervise the execution of all scheduled operations.
- To effectively manage and lead the plant’s maintenance crew and outside contractors in all maintenance related activities, such as repairs, installations and modifications to plant equipment, plant buildings and grounds.
- To achieve 100% adherence to existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) related to maintenance and established at the plant as part of the food safety system.
- To promptly alert management of imminent break downs and to look for ways to prevent accidents. Alert management or Quality Control (QC) about conditions that can create unsafe food processing practices and/or affect the quality of the finish product.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are the main responsibilities for the position:
- Perform equipment and facility’s preventive maintenance services using appropriate check list; inspect, analyze and diagnose all machine and assembly component problems and defects. Perform all needed adjustments, repairs, rebuilding, replacements and installations of machine and assembly components.
- Read and understand the Company Haccp plan and the food safety programs in place.
- Develop and maintain a log with daily break downs and repairs on each piece of equipment to be able to find trends and to prevent breakdowns. Develop a task list for preventative maintenance activities, and ensure adherence to it.
- Respond to breakdowns in a prompt and appropriate manner to minimize down time, overtime and low quality or downgrading of the birds (trim).
- Learn and understand the process and the different stages and phases of quail processing. Learn the details of each piece of equipment at the plant and be able to understand the way it functions, by reading handbooks and studying blue prints as needed.
- Supervise maintenance personnel. Supervise that the crew observes the SOPs and GMPs always with product integrity and food safety in mind. Set maintenance crew schedules and work hours, discuss with HR any and all issues involving discipline, vacations, on the job accidents and all other personnel related matters. Perform an employee evaluation of each member of the crew as per company policy. Organize and direct training on new equipment, tools or procedures.
- Safeguard and protect company personnel by reporting unsafe operations or conditions. Safeguard and protect company equipment and supplies and to advice management of any suspicious activity including tampering with product or equipment.
- Maintain a direct line of communication with the plant manager and other members of management to effectively make decisions that improve efficiency and minimize losses. Attend company meetings and request them if needed.
- Work closely with QC to improve in every possible way and to prevent contamination of product by following GMPs and SOPs.
- Communicate with equipment operators and floor personnel to get input on equipment performance, safety and reliability. Listen to their complaints and make decisions based on the best information available. Observe equipment and people at work.
- Communicate with vendors and suppliers to obtain support and guidance in the maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
In summary, the maintenance superintendent position is an important part of the management team and as such his or her actions have direct effect on quality, efficiency and overall performance.
