GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
The Youth Ministry Leader is responsible for directing the Church’s ministry with middle-school aged youth. This person must have a vibrant and growing relationship with Christ and a genuine calling for guiding youth to develop the same spirit. This position reports to the Pastor and works with the lay leadership of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- An understanding of and willingness to support the theological diversity of the United Methodist Church.
- The ability to lead youth in growing relationships with God, including having a mature understanding of Scripture, willingness to pray with others, and ability to plan and lead lessons.
- Be teachable, humble, and have a servant’s heart.
- Be an example to others, particularly the youth, in Christian character and integrity.
- Be a self-starter as well as a team player.
- Have a calling to lead and teach youth.
- Successfully complete the Safe Gatherings certification (cost paid by First UMC).
RESPONSIBILITIES
- The freedom to work evenings and weekends and accompany youth on trips.
- Meet weekly with youth and promote the Church’s teachings, service projects, mission projects, and fun activities.
- Actively promote and participate in United Methodist Church Conference and District programs for youth, including United Methodist curriculum for lesson planning and presentation.
- Equip youth to be active participants and leaders in worship (liturgists, ushers, etc.).
- Develop appropriate relationships with youth and their families.
- Track and account for all income, spending, etc.
- Recruit adults as volunteers for teaching and trips as needed, and help provide training as needed.
- Make intentional efforts to contact every youth on the church rolls and constituents at least two times during the year.
- Meet with Pastor weekly to keep communication flowing.
- Communicate in various formats to congregations, i.e. emails, social media, monthly newsletter, bulletin announcements, and face-to-face.
- Attend GBFUMC Christian Education Team meetings.
- And other responsibilities and functions as needed or requested by the Pastor.
HOURS AND COMPENSATION
Job Type: Part-time. 10 hours per week.
