The Country Day School is a NAEYC accredited independent school that offers developmentally appropriate educational programs and summer camp for up to 235 young children from 2 through 6 years old. The campus, with two historic education buildings, is located on four wooded acres with nine playgrounds, including a butterfly garden, nature trail, art studio, and a library in McLean, Virginia.
The ideal candidate is an experienced early childhood educator with educational vision, a natural ability to engage and support teaching staff, experience with early childhood curriculum, provide leadership in all areas of the school’s curriculum and instructional practices, strong interpersonal relations skills, innovative, excellent oral and written communication and computer skills, and a willingness to promote collaboration between faculty and administration in a positive manner. Experience with integrating an outdoor classroom approach into the curriculum is a plus. Prior teaching experience in a NAEYC accredited program is valuable.
The Country Day School is the first early childhood center in the country to be honored as a certified Project Learning Tree’s Green School.
Duties:
- Participate in the selection of school faculty, recommend hiring of teachers, and supervise teachers in assignment and evaluation.
- Member of Child Study Committee engaging in collaborative observation of children referred by teachers to determine support systems for teachers and families. Checks conference reports to ensure they are consistent with child study data.
- Collaborate with administrative staff and faculty to determine programs, program schedules, teacher placement, hours and planning time.
- Oversight and support of research-based curriculum development.
- Plan and facilitate new and returning teacher orientation sessions.
- Responsible for supporting the Head of School and teaching staff in research, oversight and support of curriculum development.
- Supervise and support teachers through the National Association for the Education of Young. Children (NAEYC) re-accreditation and complete NAEYC annual report each year
- Oversee Project Learning Tree certification and curriculum.
- Oversee substitutes and ensure classes are covered daily, work with Director of Finance to update vacation/sick spreadsheet for payroll
- Visit classrooms regularly to facilitate the implementation of curriculum, class organization and early childhood education best practices, using observation and coaching.
- Documents progress on classrooms and teachers after coaching has been provided.
- Develops and follows through on personnel action plans, as needed for teachers.
- Supports teachers by reviewing class newsletters, monthly goals, conference reports and independent school recommendations.
- Hold ongoing meetings with each age level, across age levels, and the whole staff to increase communication between faculty and between teachers and administration. Facilitates discussions regarding curriculum, school events, and overall pedagogical practices.
- Evaluates practices and procedures as part of continued improvement plan and ongoing effort.
- Oversee outplacement process for students applying to private schools locally, domestically, and globally.
- Perform other duties as agreed to by the Head of School.
Requirements for the job include a minimum of a degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related fields, master’s degree preferred. A state licensed teacher certificate is a plus. Transcripts and diploma/s need to be made available upon hire.
