I. Job Summary
The Child Care Teacher will execute the Bethlehem Lutheran Child Care program, which includes activities for children that stress physical, social, spiritual, and emotional growth. The Teacher prepares materials and classrooms for class activities and conducts all activities in a safe, organized, and productive manner. In addition, the Teacher will complete duties to ensure the facility is sanitary and maintained in good order. It is expected that the Child Care Teacher will complete personal development activities to ensure that she/he learn child care practices and Bethlehem’s policies and procedures.
II. General Duties and Responsibilities
1. Leading and Planning Duties a. With the direction of the Assistant Director and/or Lead Teacher, be responsible for the overall supervision and daily class functions of a group of children. b. Attempt to meet the needs of all children in your classroom. i. Utilize positive discipline techniques. ii. Help to provide an attractive, well-kept classroom that encourages creativity and exploration for the children. c. Show professional attitude and demeanor toward children, parents, visitors and other staff members at all times. i. Greet parents and children upon arrival and departure in a welcoming, enthusiastic manner. ii. Communicate requests from parents to staff and ensure all appropriate staff is aware of the requests. iii. Answer parent’s questions if able (or refer to Assistant Director or Director if the questions require more than a positive response). d. Properly document Accident Reports. e. Give guidance and assistance to Assistant Teachers and other co-workers as needed.
2. Nurturing Duties a. Teach each child about our Savior by modeling a Christ-like attitude. b. Supervise the children in the classroom, bathroom and hallway, never allow the children to be alone. c. Prepare and help serve lunch and snacks as needed. d. Maintain a quality rest time for the children. i. Assist children that may require help to fall asleep. ii. Minimize personal distractions while helping children fall asleep (i.e. do not have your cell phone). iii. Provide quiet activities for the children who are not sleeping after 30 minutes of resting. e. Inform coworkers if you are leaving the classroom or area and advise them as to when you will return.
3. Maintenance Duties a. Maintain a clean and sanitized classroom by regularly washing tables, toys, bathrooms, floors, etc. as needed.
b. Be aware of the maintenance and repair of classroom equipment and keep Assistant Director informed of any necessary repairs or replacement of said equipment.
4. Developmental Duties a. Be aware of all personnel policies and comply with the policies. b. Accept assistance and guidance from other team members when needed and as directed. c. Participate in spiritual growth and development opportunities. d. Attend staff meetings. e. Participate in continuing education opportunities.
5. Other Duties a. The Teacher may be asked to perform duties not specifically listed in this job description. It is expected that these duties be carried out. b. Assist with the opening or closing duties of the classroom as necessary. c. Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies and balance inventory among all of the Child Care rooms. d. Make recommendations for purchases needed.
III. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
1. Spiritual a. Willingness to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Bible (a required course will be offered during the first 6 months of employment). b. Support the mission and vision of Bethlehem Church and be loyal to the leadership of the church in all aspects of life.
2. Professional Education/Experience
a. Must have a cheerful and positive attitude and be willing to help in all situations. b. Must be at least 18 years of age. c. At least Two (2) years of successful experience in working with young children preferred. d. Certification in First Aid and CPR (offered in-house).
Physical Requirements: The Teacher must have the ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, grasp and lift as needed to support free play activities and maintenance tasks. Lifting requirement is 20 pounds. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor exposure with outdoor exposure limited to no less than 0 degrees.
