Position: Danny Woo Community Garden Manager
Reports to: Community Programs and Advocacy Manager
Exempt Position: 40 hours/week
Starting Salary: $22-$24/hr, Health and Vacation Benefits
Job Summary
As a community garden manager, you will play a crucial role in fostering community engagement, promoting sustainable practices, and maintaining the overall health and productivity of our community garden. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of garden operations, including planning, organizing, and executing various gardening activities. Your leadership will be instrumental in creating a vibrant and inclusive environment where individuals of all backgrounds can come together to cultivate, learn, and share experiences.
Responsibilities:
1. Garden Operations and Maintenance:
a. Collaborate with community members, including volunteers, gardeners, and interns, to develop garden layouts and planting schedules.
b. Coordinate the selection and procurement of seeds, plants, tools, and other necessary supplies.
c. Oversee day-to-day garden operations, including planting, weeding, watering, repairing, trimming, pruning, and trash picking.
d. Ensure that the garden is well-maintained and adheres to sustainable gardening practices.
e. Supervise volunteer coordinator in assigning tasks as needed to maintain the garden’s health and productivity.
2. Community Engagement
a. Organize at least one educational workshop, gardening demonstrations, or community event per month to engage residents of all ages.
b. Develop outreach strategies to attract new volunteers and gardeners from diverse backgrounds.
c. Act as a liaison between the garden community and local organizations, schools, and government agencies.
3. Grant Reporting and Fundraising:
a. Prepare grant proposals and reports to secure funding for garden projects and programs.
b. Maintain accurate records of expenses, program outcomes, and other relevant data for reporting purposes.
c. Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners to support ongoing garden initiatives.
4. Weekly Senior Cooking Classes:
a. Plan, organize, and facilitate weekly cooking classes for seniors. May utilize fresh produce from the garden if possible.
b. Develop seasonal recipes that highlight locally grown ingredients and promote healthy eating habits.
c. Create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages participation and fosters social connections among participants.
5. Internship Program
a. Recruit, train, and supervise interns to assist with various aspects of garden management and programming.
b. Provide hands-on learning opportunities and mentorship to help interns develop gardening/community engagement skills and leadership abilities.
c. Collaborate with educational institutions and community organizations to promote internship opportunities and recruit diverse candidates.
6. Communication and Documentation:
a. Maintain regular communication with gardeners, volunteers, and stakeholders through email, WeChat, social media, and newsletters.
b. Document garden activities, events, and accomplishments through photos, videos, sign-in sheets, and reports.
c. Share success stories and testimonials to showcase the impact of the garden on the community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, nutrition, community development, or a related field (preferred).
- Previous experience in community gardening, program coordination, or nonprofit management.
- Knowledge of sustainable gardening practices, communication, and program evaluation techniques.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and social media platforms.
Preferred Qualification:
- Chinese, especially Cantonese, or Korean proficiency
Working Conditions:
- This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours to accommodate events and workshops.
- The ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions is essential.
- Physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and kneeling, may be necessary.
