Immigrant Social Services (ISS) seeks enthusiastic and dynamic Prevention Educator with the ability to engage and build rapport with children and youth to join our team. The Prevention Educator plays an integral role in delivering comprehensive prevention education programs within school and afterschool settings and providing parent and community education and awareness through various media and platforms.
This position requires an individual committed to promoting positive youth development, building strong relationships within the community, and implementing our evidence-based curriculum to support students’ social-emotional learning and wellbeing.
This role will help foster a positive environment and address critical issues such as mental health and wellbeing, alcohol and substance misuse prevention, bullying and violence prevention, and gambling prevention, particularly within the Asian American/immigrant communities. This position reports to the Manager of Prevention and Wellbeing.
Primary Responsibilities:
Program Delivery (75%)
- Deliver evidence-based curriculum on core social emotional learning skills for alcohol and drug use prevention, violence and bullying prevention to K-12 students across multiple public school sites.
- Prepare prevention curriculum materials, lesson plans, and activities in line with the selected evidence-based program.
- Facilitate interactive and engaging activities, discussions, and role-playing exercises to promote active participation and skill-building among students.
- Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with varying learning styles and abilities.
- Collaborate with site supervisors, group leaders, and other stakeholders to coordinate program delivery and ensure alignment with goals and curriculum standards.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations to measure program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
- Ensure that all program data is recorded, documented, and reported in an accurate and timely manner.
Community Education (25%)
- Provide education and awareness content for website, social media, newsletters, virtual, and community/school-based presentations and trainings.
- Participate and/or represent on behalf of ISS at community meetings, coalition meetings, and tabling events, as needed.
- Help plan community campaigns and events as needed.
- Attend required training, workshops, conferences, and staff development seminars on current practices as assigned to support continuing education in the appropriate field; implements what has been learned within specified time frames.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology, public health, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.
- Experience working with children and youth in educational or community-based settings, particularly in the delivery of prevention programs.
- Knowledge of evidence-based prevention strategies and curriculum, such as Positive Action, Second Step, or similar programs (preferred)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, school staff, and community partners.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Flexibility and willingness to travel to multiple school sites as needed.
- Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP), Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS), or certified or credentialed in a related discipline, a plus. Related Disciplines include: CASAC, CPGC; CPHA (Certified Public Health Administrator), NY State Education Licensed or Certified Teacher, Health Educator, Guidance Counselor, Rehabilitation Counselor, Social Worker, Licensed Mental Health Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Physician, National Board-Certified Counselor or Certified Health Education Specialist.
