The Medical Records/Legal Assistant is responsible for assisting with medical record production, contract review, drafting and editing contract templates, preparing legal notices, and assisting with assignments and projects in the areas of state and federal healthcare regulations and licensing requirements across multiple states.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Responsible for responding to requests for medical records by retrieving appropriate documents from EMR.
- Responsible for compliance with state laws with regard to the production of medical records and charges associated with such production.
- Performs clerical activities in support of the medical records department.
- Responsible for protection of the security and integrity of medical records to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained in compliance with company policies and federal, state and local regulations.
- Assists with administration of the Company’s compliance training and education program.
- Assists with review of contracts and drafting letters or legal notices related to such contracts.
- Assists with corporate entity management across multiple states.
- Assists with document production requests, including medical record requests.
- Assists with other projects within the legal and compliance department; and
- Participates in projects and resolving potential compliance issues collaboratively with other departments as appropriate.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 1+ years of legal experience preferred OR1+ years of healthcare experience preferred
- Must have a proven history of exercising discretion and retaining confidentiality
- Ability to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written instructions and to make minor decisions in accordance with rules and regulations as they apply
- Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively and professionally with individuals at all levels; both internal and external
- Exercises sound judgment in responding to inquiries; understands when to route inquiries to next level
- Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
