Environmental, Heath & Safety Manager
Zentis is Europe's number one fruit processing company and one of the leading brand manufacturers of jams, sweets and custard-based dessert. The Company's North American operations are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Plymouth, Indiana, where we produce fruit and dairy preparations for a variety of customers including yogurt, ice cream and bakery manufacturers.
The EHS Manager plans and manages the general health, safety, and loss control policies and procedures of the organization. Monitors and evaluates the workplace to ensure compliance with governmental regulatory agencies. Designs and directs safety training programs to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Develops worker plans and policies for new employee safety orientation including skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Studies, identifies, and reports causes of past accidents and develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrences. Requires a bachelor's degree of occupational safety and health or related degree.
Primary Responsibilities:
Leads the North America’s safety culture process, ensuring all Zentis NA locations are fully compliant with all applicable OSHA /EPA standards, rules and regulations.
Providing performance reporting to Zentis leadership group on a routine basis including monthly conference calls with all Facilities regarding Safety Performance.
Investigate routine cases of actual or potential violations of environmental /safety regulations and prepare compliance reports using established protocol. Prepare and respond to reports of non-compliance, inspection reports and letters of inquiry or complaint.
Maintain legal records and document programs for regulatory inspections and maintain a good working relationship and professional rapport with regulatory personnel. Prepare reports defining results of analysis, stating results and provide recommendations as appropriate.
Support application for permits associated with hazardous materials and waste including Chemical Inventory, Hazardous Materials Use and Storage, Transportation of Hazardous Materials, Spill Prevention Control Countermeasures, Storm Water Management Plan, Bioterrorism Response Act (Patriot Act), Controlled Substances, and Hazardous Waste Management. Work with such regulatory agencies as United States Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Toxic
Substance Control, Department of Health Services, Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation.
Provide consultation to personnel on matters of waste management and minimization. Assist with supervising contractors associated with any of the hazardous waste contracts while working at our locations. This supervision encompasses worker safety, regulatory compliance, contract adherence and job performance. Assist with the evaluation and maintenance of the computer programs and databases for hazardous materials inventory tracking to facilitate the preparation of reports to regulatory agencies and to internal requestors. This includes coordinating the compilation of this data from Facility Services. This position ensures proper and safe handling, labeling and manifesting of regulated waste streams. Participate in auditing programs to monitor compliance with all applicable hazardous materials/waste regulations.
Emergency Response & Preparedness Program – Review plans, monitor and advise on all hazardous materials and waste spills, to ensure safety and compliance with all local, state and federal laws. Respond to the scene of hazardous material incidents or other emergency situations to direct and to provide consultation to other responding agencies. Maintain training for HazMat response (HAZWOPER) and conduct training for emergency team members. Response may include wearing appropriate PPE and using appropriate respiratory protection. Maintain proficiency in the use and inspection of emergency respiratory protection devices. Collaborates and provides support to the Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity Program.
Drive implementation behavior-based safety program across all Zentis NA locations while working with local Site Directors and Safety personnel to sustain continuity within overall safety program (committees, manuals, alerts, etc.)
Coordinating and monitoring Risk Management Program and Process Safety Management with special emphasis on Ammonia.
Lead root cause investigation of all safety incidents, including near-misses. Support claims management process and conducts incident follow-ups.
Monitoring applicable laws and regulations, i.e. OSHA, EPA, NFPA, DOT, NIOSH.
Benchmarking the company’s performance with industry leaders.
Supporting capital projects and assists in project delivery.
Manages yearly budget for Safety Programs at each facility.
Formal Education Required:
Bachelor of Science in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Engineering or related field.
Specific Experience and Key Knowledge Requirements:
5-10 years’ experience in Environmental, Health and Safety
3 - 5 years of management and Safety/Environmental regulatory guidelines and Safety program implementation.
Special Skills and Abilities Required:
Working knowledge and ability lead root cause analysis for accident investigation.
Demonstrated ability to develop employees.
