Position Summary
Opportunity Charter School is actively seeking a dynamic and well-versed learning specialist who can effectively cater to the diverse needs of our exceptional student body. The ideal candidate will excel in cultivating strong, trusting relationships with students, fostering a welcoming and secure learning environment that promotes academic risk-taking. Additionally, they should possess experience in formulating and implementing meaningful Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Serving as an invaluable asset to our staff, the learning specialist will play a pivotal role in ensuring classroom differentiation. We are searching for a dedicated individual who not only understands but also passionately advocates for our school's vision in every interaction with stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for special education and a genuine passion for fostering a love of learning in students.
- Collaborate with general education teachers regarding the educational, social, emotional, and physical needs of each student.
- Co-teach and plan with assigned teachers to create and implement effective and differentiated instruction
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to create, implement, and regularly review individualized education plans for students with special needs.
- Design and implement instructional plans aligned with curriculum standards, ensuring relevance and engagement for students.
- Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse learning styles and abilities of students with special needs.
- Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment, implementing effective behavior management strategies as needed.
- Handle conflicts or challenges within the classroom, promoting a respectful and supportive learning community using restorative practices
- Conduct assessments to evaluate students' academic and developmental levels, and regularly monitor and document progress, and adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
- Lead an advisory group and oversee the implementation of our social-emotional curriculum within that class.
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other staff members to ensure the utilization of best practices with students.
- Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in education through ongoing professional development.
- Demonstrate teamwork, actively modeling cooperation and helpfulness for students
- Incorporate relevant technology to enhance teaching and learning experiences, promoting digital literacy skills.
- Effectively communicate with students, parents, and colleagues, keeping them informed about progress, expectations, and any concerns.
- Promote a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment that respects and values diversity.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree preferred.
- NY State Teach certification (preferred).
- Dual certification in Special Education and subject area preferred.
